We are taking a look at the Olympics most gold medal odds in this post as we give you our top betting tips.
In Olympic history, the USA have won by winning 1061 gold medals across 28 games at an average of 37.89 per event. The next most successful teams are the former Soviet Union who won 440 gold medals across 10 games appearances, an average of 44 per event. Germany has 285 gold medals across 25 games appearances, an average of 11.4 per event.
The country which lands the most gold medals needs not just a talented team but also a large one to accumulate as many gold medals as possible. That's why it’s the higher population jurisdictions which tend to dominate the medal table.
Olympic Most Gold Medal Odds
Country | Odds |
---|---|
USA | 1/6 |
China | 7/2 |
France | 50/1 |
Japan | 80/1 |
Netherlands | 200/1 |
Australia | 250/1 |

USA – 1/6
USA are strongly fancied at odds of 1/6 to win the most gold medals at Paris 2024 with those odds suggesting an 85.7% chance that they achieve that feat having done so in 7 of the last 8 Summer Olympics.
Regardless of where you look at the current medal projection the USA tops the table with statisticians expecting them to continue their Olympic dominance winning 123 medals overall including 39 gold medals, which would be an increase of their total medal haul from 2020 (113) and it would equal their gold medal result from 2020.
The USA are also projected to win medals across 26 sports, which would be less than their record result in Tokyo with 29. The strongest medal aspirations at Paris 2024 will likely be their athletics and swimming squads who have won nearly half of their 601 gold medals across those teams which is 56% of their gold medals across all Olympic events.
In 2024 they’re also expected to perform well in shooting, wrestling, gymnastics, men’s and women’s basketball, cycling, men’s and women’s tennis, archery, and equestrian.
USA are worthy favourites at 1/6 to land most gold medals but due to the considerable challenge coming from China and co, I don’t think there is much value in betting on the USA.
China - 7/2
It’s no surprise that the Chinese team are seen as the next most likely contenders to the USA for the most gold medals at odds of 7/2 at Paris 2024. Those odds suggest that China has a 22.2% chance of achieving the feat for the first time.
China are one of the most prolific teams at the Olympics with them currently 5th in the gold medal table with their total of 262 only bettered by Great Britain (285), Germany (285), the former Soviet Union (440) and the United States (1061).
Interestingly at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, they recovered from their total at Rio (70) which was their worst since 2004. At Paris 2024 China are projected to perform similarly to in 2020 when they won 38 gold medals and 89 overall this time winning 35 gold medals and 89 overall again.
Diving, shooting, swimming, weightlifting, table tennis, artistic gymnastics and badminton are China’s key medal-winning hopes, but 21 sports have the top three Chinese competitors according to the Virtual Medal Table.
At 7/2 they could prove to be a brilliant bet as they’re sure to bring a strong, vast and talented team to Paris this summer.
France - 50/1
Historically the host team always performs stronger than they usually would, and Paris 2024 is expected to be the same! France are projected to land 27 gold medals this summer which would significantly better their total of 10 gold medals from 2020 with only 33 medals won in total. However, at odds of 501 (2% chance) it’s unlikely they trouble the top two in the market.
France has traditionally been successful in 15-19 different sports at each Olympics this turn of the century, but they’re expected to bring home advantage to 23 different sports this time around.
The country tends to perform best in sports like Fencing, Cycling, Judo and Equestrian but they’re also set to bring serious gold medal aspirations to the likes of Men’s Football and Women’s Basketball too.
They should undoubtedly perform well at the event, but I don't think they will have the depth of squad to win the most gold medals and that is reflected in odds of 50/1.
Japan - 80/1
The 2020 Olympic Hosts Japan used the fruits of home advantage last time for a record-breaking medal haul for the nation with 58 Medals in total, 27 Gold, 14 Silver and 17 Bronze. However at odds of 80/1 (1.2% chance) they aren’t expected to perform this time as well.
According to the latest medal projection, Japan are expected to come close to their total medal haul with 53 predicted but significantly the proportion of gold medals is expected to drop from 27 to 16. This summer they’re expected to win medals in 21 sports equalling their record from 2020 with Judo’s Abe siblings and gymnast Daiki Hashimoto expected to perform well.
Judo and Wrestling especially in women’s events are expected to be huge for their medal haul with those two sports expected to account for a staggering 20 medals for the Japanese team.
