Usyk v Fury Fight Preview

The Rematch

Usyk and Fury have met in the ring before, last May Usyk earned a split-decision victory over Fury to become boxing's first four-belt undisputed heavyweight champion, with two scorecards reading 115-112 and 114-113 in favour of Usyk and the other 114-113 to Fury.

Usyk’s Legacy

Oleksandr Usyk is the current Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion, IBO Champion and Ring magazine title holder.

As an amateur boxer, Usyk won heavyweight gold medals at the 2011 World Championships and 2012 Olympics while accumulating a record of 335 wins and 15 losses. He turned professional in 2013, winning his first world title in 2016.

In professional boxing, Usyk has never been beaten in the ring with a record of 22-0 including victories against Tyson Fury, Daniel Dubois, Anthony Joshua (twice), Tony Bellew and Derek Chisora.

Fury’s Story

Tyson Fury is widely considered one of the finest Heavyweight Boxers of the modern era and has one of the most compelling stories of any athlete around.

From 2008 to 2015 he went from fighting in local gyms and small arenas across the UK to someone who on the 28th of November 2015 defeated Wladimir Klitschko giving him a record of 25-0 and winning the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, and The Ring heavyweight titles.

While he was expected to dominate the boxing scene following that win, the story went differently with Fury spiralling into a swarm of alcohol drugs and depression, drinking up to eighteen beers a day as he struggled to cope with his newfound fame as Heavyweight Champion his weight ballooned by ten stone which saw him stripped of his titles. He made a remarkable return to the ring in 2018 winning nine bouts including against Wilder twice and Chisora once with one draw occurring against Wilder too.

However, his unbeaten record ended in his last bout when he lost to Usyk via split decision so this will be the first time in his boxing career he will attempt to avenge a defeat.

What They’ve Said

Oleksandr Usyk

Ahead of the fight, Usyk has said he doesn’t want to be seen as an icon and simply wants to fight better to win the rematch on Saturday.

“When I got home they said that I am now a real legend. But I tell them that ‘legend’ is very high-class. I don’t like it. I like to just be a simple guy. I don’t want other people to put me as an icon. I don’t need it.”

Tyson Fury

"Oleksandr Usyk's going to feel the wrath and the menace this time, I've got a point to prove”.

Oleksandr Usyk v Tyson Fury Prediction

Prediction: Usyk @ 5/6

Usyk is a brilliant boxer and showed his class in his last victory over Fury, nearly knocking him out in the eighth round. He landed 170/407 punches for a 42% hit rate and was the more efficient boxer.

Fury, like he always does, showed great heart, particularly overcoming being nearly knocked out in the last bout. He was the more active puncher but landed fewer with 157/496 punches for a hit rate of 32%.

This promises to be an incredible bout again and though Usyk is older he’s been through fewer bouts and I expect him to be the fresher of the two on Saturday ultimately giving him the victory again.
