In this post, we take a look at the latest next Taoiseach odds as Simon Harris has seen his odds shorten to remain in the role after the next Irish General Election.

Simon Harris Odds To Be Taoiseach After Next Election

The chances of Simon Harris being Taoiseach after the next general election have been clipped slightly into 10/3 from 4/1 with BoyleSports after the Wicklow TD was officially elected as Leo Varadkar’s successor.

The new Fine Gael leader began his tenure as Taoiseach in the Dáil on Tuesday, but an election defeat could lead to an unwanted record, as Micheál Martin’s recent stint as Taoiseach was the shortest ever at 903 days.

Irish General Election Odds

Mary Lou McDonald used her speech on Tuesday to urge Harris to trigger a general election, but the new Taoiseach has already ruled out a snap poll by insisting the current coalition runs its full term. Odds of 8/11 suggest the public will have to wait until early 2025 to make their next visit to the ballot box, with Sinn Féin rated red hot favourites at 1/4 to be the party returned with most seats.

McDonald therefore is being backed as the most likely Taoiseach following the election at 8/11, but she had been a shorter-priced 4/7 favourite before Leo Varadkar’s shock resignation last month.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said:

“It looks like Simon Harris will leave it as long as possible to call the election and while the betting still suggests a short stay at the top, the trends in recent days are moving more in his favour.”
