Northern Ireland v Luxembourg Preview
Northern Ireland’s Form
Northern Ireland’s most successful manager Michael O’Neill
After several seasons away managing Stoke, Northern Ireland’s most successful manager Michael O’Neill was reappointed to the role in December 2022. In his previous nine-year tenure he had a win rate of 36.11% and a loss rate of 38.89%. Interestingly the win rate this time around is almost identical at 35.71% from fourteen games albeit with a much higher loss rate of 57.14%.
For such a small nation, they’ve several quality footballers at their disposal with Jamal Lewis who recently secured a loan move to Brazilian side Sao Paulo, Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Shea Charles and headliner Liverpool defender Conor Bradley all at their disposal.
Ahead of this game they are worthy comfortable favourites, especially considering the Windsor advantage but will need to guard against complacency.

Luxembourg’s Form
Continuity is clearly key for Luxembourg given the fact that Luc Holtz has been in charge of his country since he was appointed as manager in 2010 following a two-year stint with their U21 side. While they’ve never qualified for a tournament, they have wins over Ireland, Iceland and Bosnia among others in recent years.
Interestingly the Luxembourgian squad has players glistened across almost every top country in Europe with players in Germany, France, Portugal, Poland et al. They have five teenagers in their squad and seven players in their mid-thirties in what is an age-balanced side also.
Luxembourg’s poor form could be attributed to the quality of opposition they have played recently, but against Northern Ireland, they will feel they have every chance of a result.

Key Players To Watch
Conor Bradley – Northern Ireland
The Castlederg native (21) is arguably Northern Ireland’s most promising talent in decades. Last season was a breakout year for him at club level where he impressed across 23 appearances in all competitions.
Bradley is likely to occupy the right wing back role in this side and with defensive and attacking numbers in the elite range it will be fascinating to see how his career progresses.
Gerson Rodrigues – Luxembourg
The Portugal-born Luxembourgian (29) is currently playing his club football with Chinese second-division side GX PG Haliao. He has previously had spells with the likes of Dynamo Kyiv.
Since debuting back in 2017 he has a record of 21 goals across 63 appearances at international level (including an infamous one against the Republic of Ireland that supporters may remember).
What a week for Gerson Rodrigues!

Northern Ireland v Luxembourg Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Northern Ireland 2-1 Luxembourg
Northern Ireland are a decent side when you consider the player pool at their disposal. Under the managerial acumen of Michael O’Neill and with stars like Conor Bradley they can’t be underestimated at this level of the Nations League.
Luxembourg are no giants in the footballing world, but they’ve progressed in recent years and should be underestimated at Northern Ireland’s peril.
The Northern Irish should have enough to win this game, but I think Luxembourg could cause them a scare or two.
