Eagles vs Commanders Head-To-Head

All-Time Head-To-Head Record

Eagles lead the all-time series 90-85-5. Philadelphia has also won 3 of the last 5 games between these teams.

Recent Head-To-Head Games

These teams, as they are divisional rivals, have already played twice this season. The Eagles won the first time out 26-18 at home. The Commanders won the second game 33-36 in Washington.

The Key Matchups

Quarterback – Jalen Hurts v Jayden Daniels

There are concerns about Jalen Hurts going into this game after suffering a knee injury in the wild-card game against Los Angeles. Hurts was able to finish the game but his mobility seemed to be limited after sustaining the injury.

Hurts will play in this game, of that there is no doubt, the question lingers though will he be his usual mobile self. Given that the Eagles QB relies so much on his legs, being one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the league, it would be a massive knock to the Philly offence if he is unable to use his legs as a weapon in this game.

Jayden Daniels for Washington is a rookie, who typically struggle in the playoffs, but Daniels has bucked that trend with 2 wins in his first 2 playoff outings as a pro. He has been impressive in the Commanders’ wins against the Buccaneers and Lions with 567 yards, 4 TDs, and a passer rating of 116.2. He will be playing a much better defence this time around however in the Eagles.

Head Coach – Nick Sirianni v Dan Quinn

Nick Sirianni has come under a lot of criticism during his time as Eagles Head Coach. This comes despite his team’s success. Under his leadership, the Eagles made it to the Super Bowl in Sirianni’s first year before ultimately falling short by 3 points against the Chiefs in the big game. Last year they also started off strong before collapsing in the second half of the season which led many to call for the dismissal of the coach. This year the Eagles look back to their best but this time around few people are looking to give Sirianni praise for the team’s success.

Dan Quinn has had plenty of success in this league having led the Falcons to a Super Bowl appearance in 2017. Kliff Kingsbury, Commanders OC, is also well respected in league circles for his offensive scheme and has done a great job with rookie QB Daniels.

Offence

The Eagles love to run the ball on offence and who can blame them given how good they are at it. Saquon Barkley rushed for over 2,000 yards this season and could have broken the single-season rushing record had he not rested in week 18.

Everything about this Eagles offence stems from their success running the ball. Even at quarterback, Jalen Hurts is one of the best rushing threats in the league at the position although may be limited in this game due to a knee injury. Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore likes to use a lot of play-action passing to keep opposing defences off balance as they also try to contain Philadelphia’s talented receiving core.

The Commanders also have a great offence but they will have to deal with a noisy raucous Philadelphia home crowd. This will make communication a lot more difficult for them in this game. Washington also ranked top 10 in key offensive stats such as points scored, offensive yards and red zone TD %.

Defence

The Eagles have the advantage between these two defences.

Philadelphia have the best defence in the league judging by the eye test and many key defensive metrics. This unit is super talented with a stingy defensive front that matches up well against the run and the pass along with talent at linebacker and in the secondary. With a loud home crowd, they are a nightmare for any opposing offence and will make the Commanders work hard for every yard on Sunday.

The Commanders have been an average defence this season but have made big plays in big moments against the Bucs in the Wild Card round and the Lions in the Divisional Round last week. Down-to-down this defence is not stifling and will give up yards but to this point in the playoffs, they have been opportunistic in creating turnovers and holding out on big 4th downs.

Eagles vs Commanders Weather Forecast

It is expected to be another chilly evening in Philadelphia for this NFC Championship Game with a predicted temperature of 5 degrees celsius at kick-off.

Wind could also be a factor with 24 km/h wind speeds forecasted.

Expect these conditions to play in favour of the Eagles who are a run-heavy team while the Commanders could be negatively impacted as they like to air the ball out on offence which will be more difficult with wind and colder temperatures. All figures quoted are per AccuWeather .

Eagles vs Commanders Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Eagles 27 Commanders 13

Philadelphia boasts the best defence in the league, with their ability to stifle both the run and the pass. Combined with home-field advantage and the energy from a raucous crowd, the Eagles’ defence is primed to limit Jayden Daniels and the Commanders’ offence.

The predicted cold and windy weather plays into the Eagles' hands. Their run-heavy offense led by Saquon Barkley thrives in such conditions, whereas the Commanders' pass-heavy style might struggle.

Despite Hurts’ knee concern, even a slightly limited Hurts is effective, and the Eagles' run game can take the pressure off. Their offensive balance should allow them to control the game.

While the Commanders’ defence has been opportunistic in the playoffs, their average play on a down-to-down basis could be exposed against a balanced Eagles offence.

Best Bet: Eagles -6.5 @ 20/21
