AFC Championship Tip

AFC Championship Prediction: Denver +4.5 points vs New England @ 10/11

The Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots have had very similar profiles this season but punters must now take two crucial factors into consideration.

Each team took advantage of kind schedules to post 14-3 records in the regular season, spurred on by rock-solid defences and impressive young quarterbacks.

However, the Broncos must now cope without Bo Nix after he fractured a bone in his ankle late on in last week’s dramatic 33-30 overtime win over the Buffalo Bills.

Back-up QB Jarrett Stidham was actually drafted by New England back in 2019 before moving to Denver via Las Vegas and has made just four NFL starts in seven seasons.

Stidham last threw a competitive pass at the end of the 2023 campaign but the vibes coming out of the Broncos’ camp suggest they are very confident of him being ready to step up.

“He’s going to rip it,” declared head coach Sean Payton, who hailed the 29-year-old’s calm demeanour and dedicated approach during practice sessions.

If Stidham can hold his nerve and reproduce his excellent pre-season form, we feel Denver still have more all-round ability than New England.

The Patriots are an impressive 8-0 on the road this term but adapting to playing at altitude at Mile High is never easy, especially after a bruising encounter with the Houston Texans in snowy conditions last weekend, so we’re taking Denver with a tempting 4.5 points start.

NFC Championship Tip

NFC Championship Prediction: Seattle -2.5 points vs Los Angeles Rams @ 20/23

These teams are hard to split on regular-season form, with the Los Angeles Rams prevailing 21-19 on home turf when they met at SoFi Stadium in mid-November and the Seattle Seahawks coming out on top 38-37 after overtime in last month’s return fixture.

However, Seattle have everything in their favour here, with their fanatical fans sure to create a white-hot atmosphere at Lumen Field , where they demolished the San Francisco 49ers 41-6 in the Divisional Round.

Kenneth Walker ran in three touchdowns and the Seahawks’ swarming defence kept the 49ers to just a couple of field goals.

In contrast, the Rams have laboured through two tight play-off victories, prevailing 34-31 at Carolina and then 20-17 in overtime at Chicago .

There were times this season when Sean McVay’s offence looked unstoppable, with Matthew Stafford finding star wide receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams at will.

They have stuttered and stalled over the past month or so, though, and we feel Seattle have the momentum and freshness to sweep them aside.
