In this post, we look at the most likely Premier League managers to leave their post odds and prediction as the season hots up.

The life of a Premier League manager can be tenuous at the best of times. Managers are under constant pressure to perform and deliver results for their perspective clubs and if you don’t your position is likely to become untenable quickly.

That’s’ the nature of modern football, no job is safe and you’re only as good as your last decent result 6/20 of the current EPL Managers have been in charge less than a year and only 7/20 have been in charge for over two years.

In the 23/24 season, 14 coaches lost their job with Chelsea sacking three Tuchel, Potter, and Saltor. This broke the previous record of 10 which occurred in 08/09, 13/14, 17/18, and 21/22.

However, in contrast to last season where six managerial changes had been made whether it be temporary or permanent by the 1st of November.  Since the start of the season, no manager has yet received the proverbial bullet. Although that is likely to change sooner rather than later and while in some quarters we’re entering “Cuffing Season” in terms of modern-day football sacking season seems only a stone's throw away.

So who are the most likely candidates to leave their post next?

Paul Heckingbottom – 5/4

Paul Heckingbottom of Sheffield United has the unwanted "privilege" of being the most likely Manager To Leave Their Post at 5/4 following just one-point earned in their opening ten games of the season.

Heckingbottom was initially appointed as U23 lead coach at the club in July 2020, but following Chris Wilder leaving by mutual consent in March 2021, with the team bottom of the Premier League and 12 points adrift of safety, Heckingbottom took interim charge until the end of the season.

Sheffield United were relegated and he wasn’t given the job until November 2021 when he finally got the job permanently.  They were promoted last season following their second-place Championship finish.

Following a 5-0 defeat against Arsenal last weekend, the pressure is reaching boiling point. However they've a relatively easy run of games  coming with Wolves, Brighton, Bournemouth, Burnley and Liverpool.

While those games present an opportunity to get some points I don't think they're good enough and it seems a matter of when and not if he loses his job.

Best Bet

Erik ten Hag 11/8

ten Hag had a successful first-season at the club winning the EFL Cup and returning the side to the top four. However, football is a volatile game and with eight defeats and seven wins from their opening fifteen matches that ten Hag is under the microscope once again.

Poor luck with suspensions, off-field issues and injuries will only wash for so long despite him retaining the public backing of Chief Executive Richard Arnold.

If this poor form continues his job could be deemed untenable sooner rather than later.

In their next five games they have Fulham, Copenhagen, Luton, Everton and Galatasaray as the pressure continues to mount on ten Hag.

Precarious but unlikely (for now)

Andoni Iraola– 8/1

Andoni Iraola looks like the third most likely manager to leave their post having earned just six-points from their opening ten league games. That record has them currently seventeenth in the table and one-point above the relegation zone.

Iraola was appointed as Bournemouth manager on the 19th of June after sacking Gary O'Neil on the same day.  The club spent a considerable sum of €127.69m during the summer and with that comes plenty of pressure for performances.

Their next five league games are Manchester City, Newcastle, Sheffield United, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace though and while there 2-1 over Burnley bides him time. Unless a miracle turns in the next five games I think he could find himself the next gone after Heckingbottom

Not this time.

Vincent Kompany - 9/1

Vincent Kompany looks like the fourth most likely manager to leave their post having earned just four-points from their opening ten league games. That record has them currently nineteenth in the table and two-points off safety from the relegation zone.

Kompany was appointed as Bournemouth manager on the 14th of June 2022. He did a brilliant job last season as the club dominated the Championship with a 101-point total coming ten clear of Sheffield United. However, the transition to the Premier League has not proved easy so far.

Their next five league games are Crystal Palace, Arsenal, West Ham, Sheffield United and Wolves. I'd expect them to pick up a few points during this run.

His job is safe

My One to Watch…

Mauricio Pochettino – 16/1

In a reasonable, rational world, Pochettino would not be in consideration. I mean, he has been in the job “officially” for a little under two months.

However, when I first proposed this he was 28/1 so his odds have shortened considerably since.

Despite paying over 385 million this summer along with considerable investment last season. This will take the squad time to gel, that would be the natural assumption. But Chelsea are not a regular football club, four managers took charge of them last season which shows how chaotic the club can be.

Ten games into the season they're eleventh (actually behind Manchester United).  However, their Expected Points have them sixth which suggests their performances have improved this season.

In their next five league games they face Tottenham, Manchester City, Newcastle, Brighton and Manchester United. This could go one way or another for the club but a poor run of form could see his odds shorten further.
