Next Match of the Day Host Tips & Betting
The latest betting on Gary Lineker’s replacement on Match of the Day suggest a female could be taking over in the hotseat, with an early gamble on Kelly Cates making the switch to BBC’s flagship football show.
The Sky Sports presenter has been gambled down to 10/3 from 7/1 with BoyleSports just days after the BBC confirmed Lineker will be stepping away from hosting duties at the end of the current Premier League season.
The gamble puts Cates among the favourites for the role, with Match of the Day 2 frontman Mark Chapman currently leading the race with the oddsmakers at 13/8, ahead of former Arsenal defender Alex Scott (3/1).
Lineker has hinted at changes by saying organisers are planning to do things “slightly differently” on the iconic highlights show, with some reports suggesting favourite Chapman is opposed to the idea of a potential job share with a female host.
Could A Woman Be The Next Match of the Day Host?
BoyleSports is offering odds of 6/4 that any new permanent host will be female, although it’s an odds-on 1/2 shot that it’s a male with Chapman believed to be a frontrunner.
Odds of 1/3 suggest the BBC will appoint from within, with Chapman, Scott, Cates and other contenders like Gabby Logan and Kelly Somers already on the payroll at the Beeb.
Micah Richards (33/1), Ian Wright (33/1) and Alan Shearer (40/1) are rated outsiders, with odds of 4/11 suggesting the new name at the helm will not be a former professional footballer.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: “There are murmurings that a BBC shake-up could be in store for Match of the Day and while Mark Chapman remains favourite, a host of female contenders are being well backed to get the gig.”
