With Ruben Amorim under intense pressure and among the favourites in the Premier League sack race, we’re examining the next Manchester United manager odds.
Amorim enjoyed plenty of success with Sporting in his native Portugal but has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford since succeeding Erik ten Hag in November 2024.
The chase for a seventh permanent head coach since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement could well feature these early favourites to replace Amorim:
Gareth Southgae
GARETH SOUTHGATE @ 11/4
The former midfielder had spells in charge of Middlesbrough and England Under-21s before embarking on a stellar eight-year stint as Three Lions boss. He led England to two European Championship finals and the World Cup semis.
Hailed for creating a positive culture within the international squad, Southgate could be the ideal candidate to bring cohesion to United’s dressing room.
Olivier Glasner
OLIVIER GLASNER @ 5/1
The Austrian may appeal as a former one-club man as a player, making more than 500 appearances with SV Ried.
His CV as a manager makes pretty impressive reading as well, gaining promotion with LASK, qualifying for the Champions League with Wolfsburg, winning the Europa League at Eintracht Frankfurt and lifting the FA Cup with Crystal Palace. Favours a similar formation to Amorim.
Michael Carrick
MICHAEL CARRICK @ 8/1
Picked up silverware throughout his dozen years as a player with United, including five Premier League titles, Champions League and Europa League successes and a Club World Cup triumph.
Was assistant to Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford and briefly took charge following his departure. Did the same with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and emerged with credit on both occasions, but his managerial record at Middlesbrough was only moderate.
Eddie Howe
EDDIE HOWE @ 10/1
Was touted as a future United boss whilst doing well at Bournemouth and his stock has only risen during a successful spell at the Newcastle helm, but whether he could be tempted to leave the Magpies at this point is open to question.
Marco Silva
MARCO SILVA @ 10/1
Enjoyed mixed results during stints with Estoril, Sporting, Olympiacos, Hull, Watford and Everton but has really impressed since taking charge of Fulham in 2021, first winning the Championship and then securing three mid-table placings in the Premier League.
Wouldn’t be the most glamorous signing, but Silva is now a respected coach.
Xavi
XAVI @ 10/1
Four times a Champions League winner during a long and distinguished playing career in a brilliant Barcelona side, which claimed eight La Liga titles.
Also a World Cup and dual European Championship victor with Spain and earned a reputation for enforcing strict rules around training after returning to Barca as manager in 2021, topping the domestic table in 2022-23.
Unai Emery
UNAI EMERY @ 10/1
Three times a Europa League winner when head coach at Sevilla, he defeated United on penalties to lift the same trophy with Villarreal in 2021.
Also led Arsenal to the final of that competition, steered PSG to a domestic treble and has largely received rave reviews for his work with Aston Villa.
ZInedine Zidane
ZINEDINE ZIDANE @ 12/1
Once hailed as the best footballer on the planet, Zidane also covered himself in glory when manager of Real Madrid, becoming the first coach to win the Champions League three years in a row.
Has been out of the game for some time but tempting him to make a comeback would certainly cause ripples of excitement throughout Old Trafford and the Premier League as a whole.
