Next Fine Gael Leader Favourite
Simon Harris leads the early betting with BoyleSports as 4/6 favourite to be the next leader of Fine Gael after Leo Varadkar’s shock resignation.
Varadkar caused a political shockwave on Tuesday afternoon when he said he was stepping down for reasons “both personal and political,” claiming a new Taoiseach will be better placed to achieve gains for Fine Gael at the next general election. His party is a 9/2 underdog alongside Fianna Fáil in the betting to win most seats in the next election, with Sinn Féin rated hot 1/4 favourites.

Harris has been swapping positions as the frontrunner to be next leader with Simon Coveney (3/1) over the past few years, but the bets in the immediate aftermath of Varadkar’s announcement favour the Minister for Further and Higher Education. Paschal Donohoe (3/1), Helen McEntee (4/1) and Jennifer Carroll MacNeill (8/1) are also prominent on the list of likely successors.
Leo Varadkar Next Job Odds
Some Irish punters have already turned their attention to what is next for Varadkar and he has quickly been backed down to 16/1 from 50/1 to replace Michael D Higgins in Áras an Uachtaráin when the Presidential role changes hands next year.
Varadkar insisted he had “nothing lined up” during his emotional address from Government Buildings, but odds of 7/4 suggest he may tie the knot before the end of the year, while the chances of a tell-all memoir hitting bookshelves by Christmas are rated at 20/1.
Some unlikely career changes are also the subject of some speculative wagers. It’s unlikely at 5000/1 that the FAI will turn to the outgoing Taoiseach as next Republic of Ireland manager, but just as Dancing with the Stars winner Nina Carberry is eyeing a move into the political sphere, Varadkar is a 25/1 shot to go in the opposite direction by stepping onto the dancefloor in the next series of the RTÉ show.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said:
“It’s simply Simons when it comes to a replacement with Harris and Coveney fighting it out as favourites, but the speculation on what Leo Varadkar will do next ranges from President to the Paso Doble!”
