Ahead of the anticipated clash of the Republic of Ireland (who will be managed by Heimir Hallgrímsson for the first time) vs Euro 2024 finalists England in the post-Southgate era we’re looking at the most likely favourite to be England's Captain on the 7th of September.

Harry Kane – 1/2
The current favourite to be England's Captain vs the Republic of Ireland is current Captain Harry Kane (30) at odds of 1/2 suggesting a 66.7% chance he retains the role.
England’s Record scorer with 66 goals from 98 appearances took the role of captain for his nation when Gareth Southgate named him as captain when he was 24 in advance of the 2018 World Cup.
However, despite his prolific record for his country (as well as with his clubs), Kane received plenty of criticism throughout their journey to the Euro 2024 Final with plenty of pundits and supporters of the team arguing that his recent performances warrant him being dropped.
Despite the criticism he has received and some people’s belief that a striker is not always the best choice for captain. Kane’s odds are reflected in the fact it’s still very unlikely he will be dropped from the team. But at odds of 1/2, I still wouldn’t be considering backing him at that price.
Declan Rice – 4/1
The most likely contender to replace Harry Kane as England's Captain for their game against the Republic of Ireland is ironically former senior Ireland international Declan Rice at odds of 4/1. That suggests a 20% chance he earns the honour.
Declan Rice (25) originally started his International career with the Republic of Ireland (which he qualified for due to his grandparents from Cork) he represented them from the U16-U21 level 20 times before playing 3 times with the Seniors in 2018. However, Following numerous speculation about a switch to his nation of birth, Rice pledged his allegiance to England on the 13th of February 2019 in what was quite a controversial switch in the Republic of Ireland.
However, since that switch, he has become a crucial player for England being capped 58 times and scoring 3 times since 2019 and playing in multiple international tournaments. You can question elements of what went on, but I don’t think Rice regrets anything.
If you fancy there to be a new captain for this game he is the most likely candidate even if it would ironically be against the nation he started with.
Kyle Walker – 7/1
The joint favourite to be England's Captain vs the Republic of Ireland is Manchester City player Kyle Walker (34) at odds of 7/1 suggesting a 12.5% chance he captains England for this game.
Since debuting with the England Senior side in 2011 he has been a mainstay in the team having been capped 90 times and scoring a sole goal. Despite criticism over his performances for England this summer he remains an integral part of the squad with his 9 appearances already in 2024 only bettered by his tally of 10 in 2016, 12 in 2018 and 12 in 2021.
For club and country Walker remains a key player and despite his advancing years has retained arguably the strongest feature in this game (his pace). If Kane is dropped and Rice dodges the Aviva, he certainly would be the next candidate for the job.
Jude Bellingham – 7/1
The other joint favourite to be England's Captain vs the Republic of Ireland is Real Madrid player Jude Bellingham (20) with odds of 7/1 also suggesting a 12.5% chance he captains England for this game.
Bellingham (21) has widely been considered England’s biggest hope of guiding them to an international tournament and has already received plenty of plaudits for his 36 caps and 5 goals since debuting for the Seniors in 2020. His performances with Real have also put him in Ballon D’ Or contention after 23 goals and 13 assists from 42 matches in his debut season.
Despite having “moments” with England at Euro 2024, his general performances were subject to much criticism along with questions about his relationship with teammates from respected journalists meaning it is unlikely that right now he would be considered for the role.
Ironically, if he was allowed to captain England against the Republic of Ireland he would be captaining against a country he also holds a passport for (due to a grandparent). Bellingham is likely to captain England in the future, but I think it’s too early for him now.
Best Bet: Declan Rice @ 4/1
