Newcastle v Man City Preview
Newcastle’s Form
Since the Saudi takeover, the rise in the club's stature has been constant albeit slower than City’s previous rise (due to PSR Rules). Last season they were consistent across competitions being competitive in the Champions League “Group of Death” finishing 7th in the league and reaching the Quarter-Finals in both the EFL and FA Cup.
Last weekend they put in an uncharacteristically poor showing against Fulham at Craven Cottage where they dominated 62% of possession but failed to create chances of substance scoring 1 goal from an XG of 1.10 and 16 shots. Fulham on the other hand from their 16 shots accumulated 3 goals from an XG of 3.21 to earn a deserved 3-1 win.
An extremely difficult fixture to bounce back with, though they could profit from Pep overcomplicating a Rodri “solution”.

Man City’s Form
While off-the-field issues at Man City are ongoing due to their FFP trial their playing performances look as resilient as ever. Last weekend they earned a point at the Etihad against Arsenal when Stones scored a dramatic 98th-minute equaliser. They then heavily rotated for the EFL Cup against Watford and an early 2-0 lead through Doku and Nunes was enough for the win despite the visitors scoring in the 86th minute and having a goal disallowed.
However, with Rodri now injured, Guardiola faces one of his biggest tactical dilemmas in how to replace and do without his most important player. City’s ultra-possession dominant and attacking system was more than partially possible due to Rodri’s presence as the best single-pivot midfielder in the world. Whether he has a player who can play the same role remains to be seen or if a tactical readjustment will be needed.
City must win in this game if they want to guarantee staying top for at least another week at this early stage of the season.

Key Players To Watch
Bruno Guimaraes – Newcastle
The Brazilian midfielder is one of the best in the league and has previously been linked to his opponents for this game. Not surprising for a Brazilian he is an elite dribbler and passer when compared to other central midfielders his 1.91 Successful take-ons per 90 put him in the 97th percentile and his 7.43 Progressive Passes in the 88th percentile. He also offers solid contributions defensively which will be key to stifling City on Saturday.
Erling Haaland – Man City
The Norwegian freak of nature has picked up where he left off last season scoring 10 goals from his opening 7 matches in all competitions with all of those goals coming in the Premier League from an XG of 5.37. With Rodi now injured, City could prove to be more open at the back and Haaland’s ruthless scoring streak may need to continue for their pursuit of further trophies.
Newcastle v Man City Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Newcastle 0-2 Man City
Newcastle are one of the rising sides in not just the Premier League but also Europe on the whole. However, with more consistency comes greater expectations and there is never the sense that Eddie Howe is fully comfortable with the clubs' commitment to him.
City rotated midweek against Watford and eventually got over the line despite the scare. The main point of contention is which system of play they chose with Rodri injured and the success of that will decide their fortune for the coming months.
I think City win this game but not by a lot with Haaland’s ruthless scoring streak continuing.
Best Bet: Man City Win + Under 2.5 Goals @ 4/1
