Newcastle v Borussia Dortmund Preview

Newcastle’s Form

Newcastle entered the season on an upward trajectory, going from eleventh in the league to fourth place last season under Eddie Howe qualifying the club for any stage of the competition for the first time since the 2003/04 season when they were eliminated at the Third Qualifying Round Stage on penalties by Partizan.

The only real departure in the summer was Allan Saint-Maximin and Chris Wood, essentially all of their first-team squad from 22/23 remains besides those two.

Newcastle recruited a lot for their academy during the window but the additions of Tonali, Barnes, Livramento and Hall on loan certainly strengthened their squad.

Despite impressively winning their first league game of the season 5-1 against Aston Villa, they lost their preceding three games albeit against Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton the pressure was mounting on Eddie Howe early in the season.

However since that run of results, Newcastle have four wins and one draw in their last five league games scoring seventeen goals and conceding three, their most recent league game was a 4-0 victory against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Newcastle’s first group game was a 0-0 away draw in Milan and that was followed by a brilliant 4-1 victory against PSG. If they can avoid defeat or even win here they’d be in a commanding position to get out of the group even at this early stage.

Borussia Dortmund’s Form

Dortmund had a decent year last season albeit a trophyless one, they came 2nd in the Bundesliga losing out on goal difference, reaching the Quarter-Final of the DFB Pokal but arguably getting knocked out of the Champions League at the Round of 16 Stage 2-1 against Chelsea on aggregate despite winning the first leg 1-0.

The major hole for Dortmund is the loss of World Class midfielder Jude Bellingham for €103,000,000 to Real Madrid during the summer and he could prove almost impossible to replace even for a club which has one of the best scouting networks in the world.

Dortmund only brought in four players in the summer Bensebaini, Nmecha, Sabitzer and Füllkrug but none of them are quite like Jude.

Despite the loss of Jude, the early signs were promising with Dortmund unbeaten in pre-season winning six games and drawing once. That form has continued into their Bundesliga campaign with six wins and two draws meaning they occupy fourth in the table trailing league leaders Leverkusen by two-points.

At the weekend they claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Werder following Brandt’s 67th-minute goal.

However, their Champions League campaign has been disappointing so far after falling to a 2-0 defeat against PSG in their opening game, which was followed by a 0-0 against Milan despite having home advantage.

Defeat for Dortmund will put their qualification hopes hugely in jeopardy, but with that being said they’re certainly no-pushovers when you see their performances in the Bundesliga.

Newcastle v Borussia Dortmund Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Newcastle 2-0 Borussia Dortmund

Following a slow start to their season, Newcastle look like they’re back to their best form with thirteen points from their last five league games and a brilliant 4-1 victory against PSG last time out in the Champions League.

Borussia are unbeaten in the Bundesliga this season with six wins and two draws meaning they currently occupy fourth in their league. However, they’ve only one point from their opening Champions League games.

This could be a tight one initially, but I think Newcastle will pull away in the second half.

Best Bet: Half-Time/Full-Time – Draw- Newcastle @ 15/4
