Newcastle’s inconsistent form continued on Saturday with a 2-1 loss at Brighton, a result which left Eddie Howe’s men with four wins, four defeats and three draws in all competitions this term.
The one positive from the Amex Stadium loss was another goal from record signing Nick Woltemade, who has now scored in five successive matches and has six in total.
Newcastle have picked up three points from their two Champions League matches and will be looking to double that tally against Benfica at St James’ Park.
The Portuguese powerhouses, European champions in 1961 and 1962, are unbeaten domestically this campaign but have lost both their Champions League games and new boss Jose Mourinho will be desperate to avoid another setback on English soil.
We think he may end up disappointed, however, with a Newcastle win and both teams to score @9/4 being our prediction.

The clubs have only faced each other twice before, with Benfica coming out on top in the 2012/13 Europa League quarter-finals.
The Lisbon outfit fought back from conceding an early Papiss Cisse goal to win the first leg 3-1 at home before the return meeting at St James’ finished 1-1, Salvio’s stoppage-time equaliser cancelling out another Cisse opener.
Benfica would go on to suffer a stoppage-time loss to Chelsea in the final.
Newcastle For
Newcastle Form
Newcastle finished last season in disappointing fashion with three defeats and a draw in their final six games - having previously won six on the trot - and they have been slow out of the blocks this term.
They only picked up two wins in their opening eight games, one of which was against League One Bradford in the Carabao Cup, and among their three defeats was a 2-1 setback at home to Marcus Rashford-inspired Barcelona in their Champions League opener.
The Magpies responded with a 4-0 win at Union Saint-Gilloise, though, and will now be eager to capitalise on back-to-back home matches against pointless pair Benfica and Athletic Bilbao ahead of tough-looking trips to Marseille, Bayer Leverkusen and Paris St Germain in their last four fixtures.
In-form Woltemade is 4/1 to open the scoring, while you can get 7/4 for Anthony Gordon to become the first Newcastle player to net in three successive Champions League appearances.
Benfica Form
Benfica Form
Everything looked to be going smoothly for Benfica under Bruno Lage as they beat Sporting to win the Portuguese Super Cup, saw off Nice and Mourinho’s Fenerbahce to reach the Champions League proper and started their domestic league campaign with three wins and a draw.
However, all that was still not enough to save Lage from the sack after his side surrendered a 2-0 lead after 16 minutes to lose 3-2 at home to European minnows Qarabag last month.
Lage was promptly replaced by Mourinho, who was unable to fare much better as Benfica lost 1-0 to his former club Chelsea in their second Champions League outing, leaving them as one of only four clubs still searching for a point.
Benfica, who defeated Chaves 2-0 in the Portuguese Cup on Friday, have not won in their last 11 meetings with Premier League clubs, but if you fancy them to end that run you can get 4/1 for an away win.
