Netherlands v Austria Preview
Netherlands’ Form
The Netherlands qualified for Euro 2024 by finishing runners-up in their qualifying Group with 6 victories and 2 defeats to come 4 points behind group winners Austria but ahead of Greece, the Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar scoring 17 goals and conceding 7. Ironically, they have been drawn against Austria again.
2024 has seen this Dutch side go from strength to strength opening their campaign with a 4-0 victory against Scotland, they then went close with the Germans losing 2-1. Ahead of Euro 2024, they had two comprehensive 4-0 wins first against Croatia and then against Iceland. In their opening game of the tournament, they came from one goal behind to beat Poland 1-2. That was followed by a 0-0 draw against France where if it wasn’t for some referee controversy they may have won the game.
The Netherlands are a relatively tactically flexible side ahead of the tournament they used 4-3-3 and 3-4-1-2 generally but so far this tournament have set themselves up in a 4-2-3-1. So far this tournament they have averaged 14.3 shots per game, 51.6% of possession and an 88.6% pass accuracy. Koeman is in his second stint as Dutch manager, he has a win rate of 64.71% after 11 wins, 1 draw and 5 defeats from 17 games.

Austria’s Form
Austria qualified for Euro 2024 by finishing runner-up in their qualifying group being ousted to the top spot by Belgium by 1 point following a record of 6 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat. That run of results came against the aforementioned Belgium as well as Sweden, Azerbaijan and Estonia. They scored 17 goals and conceded 7.
They continued their form into 2024 with two friendly wins last March defeating Slovakia 0-2 and having a ruthless 6-1 victory over Turkey. Ahead of the tournament, they had a 2-1 victory against Serbia and a 1-1 away draw against Switzerland. In their opening fixture at Euro 2024, they fell to a narrow 0-1 loss against the French but followed that by a convincing 1-3 win over Poland.
The current man in the dugout Ralf Rangnick was appointed as Austrian manager on the 29th of April 2022 on a two-year deal. Austria have tended to favour a flat-back four and used a 4-4-2/4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 before the tournament with them favouring the latter so far in this competition. In Euro 2024 they average 10.5 shots per game, 52.4% of possession and a pass completion percentage of 84.2%. They’re a serious threat to any side they play for the remainder of the competition.

Key Players To Watch
Jeremie Frimpong – Netherlands
Coming off a breakthrough season with Leverkusen where the 23-year-old led the masses with his performances from RWB scoring 14 times and assisting 12 goals from 49 matches in all competitions. Ahead of the tournament, it was unclear whether Koeman would unleash Frimpong from the start or use him as more of a bench option
After getting 9 minutes against Poland, he started against France but had a quiet game before being taken off in the 73rd minute. However, I expect him to get the start in this game again.
What does he offer? Frimpong has an electric pace, and elite dribbling ability with 5.79 Progressive Carries, 8.44 Attacking Penalty area touches and 1.77 Successful Take Ons which is in the 99th, 99th and 96th percentile for all full-backs. With Koeman, he is deployed even further forward on the RW, and he will be a serious threat to the Austrians in this game.
Marcel Sabitzer – Austria
With Captain David Alaba (31) missing the tournament through injury, Marcel Sabitzer (30) had the task of stepping up the leadership role as Captain at Euro 2024 this summer.
In their opening defeat against France, he had a quiet game but was one of their star performers in their victory against Poland. Sabitzer was a constant threat having 5 shots, winning 1 penalty, completing 2/2 of his dribbles and 23/33 of his passes, always trying to create opportunities.
Sabitzer is arguably Austria’s best player when it comes to genuine technical ability and if Austria are to win or get a result, he will likely be at the heart of the performance.
Netherlands v Austria Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Netherlands 1-1 Austria
The Netherlands will have felt a little hard done by with their latest 0-0 draw against France due to referee/VAR controversy. However, in the broader scale of things, this could be a sign of improvement in the squad since losing twice to France during qualifying.
Austria look very much to be a team on the rise and their performances under Ralf Rangnick has some people even touting them as “Dark Horses” to win Euro 2024 with a bit of luck.
I can see this being a very evenly matched game and a scored draw might be a good result for both parties.
