Munster v Stade Francais Preview

Munster Form

Munster have been on a progressive trajectory in the last two seasons, winning the URC in the 2022/23 season which was their first major piece of silverware since when they won the Magners League in the 2010/11 season. Last season they topped the URC table though they were knocked out in the Semi-Final. In the Champions Cup, they were eliminated at the Last 16 stage for the second successive season.

They’ve had a poor start to the 24/25 season though with only 3 victories and 4 defeats from their opening 7 matches and have a negative score difference of -23. However, they ended their run of three successive defeats at the weekend with a 17-10 victory over the Lions and with

Munster have not been at their best this season and it’s unlikely they’ll end their 16-year drought in the competition come May, but should still be good enough to win this game.

Stade Francais Form

Stade Francais are an interesting case study, in the 22/23 season they finished 4th in the Top 14 before being eliminated in the Quarter-Finals by Racing. Last season they finished 2nd with 75 points in the Top 14 only 1 behind Toulouse. However, they were beaten narrowly by Bordeaux in the Semi-Final 20-22.

This year has seen a huge regression though with only 3 wins and 4 defeats from their opening 7 Top 14 fixtures meaning that they’ve gone from fighting it out at the top of the table last season to now being 13h and in danger of relegation to the Pro D2. Their most recent game was a 21-13 defeat to Bayonne.

Stade Francais are former finalists in this competition losing 18-12 to Toulouse in the 04/05 season but they’re a long way off those standards at the moment.

Munster v Stade Francais Rugby Head-To-Head

All-Time Head-To-Head Record

Munster and Stade Francais have met twice in the European Champions Cup Pool Stage before with two wins shared a piece.

Stade Francais won their home game 27-7 before the following week Munster won the return fixture at home 26-13.

Key Players

Mike Haley – Munster

Haley (30) is one of the elder statesmen in this Munster Rugby squad but has been an effective Fullback signing since moving from Sale Sharks with 130 points from his 115 appearances. This year he is their top try scorer in the United Rugby Championship with 4 tries and is likely to be one of their biggest threats in this game.

Louis Carbonel – Stade Francais

The former Toulon and Montpellier Fly-Half (25) is one of the few bright points in this Stade Francais side since signing in the summer.  So far he is their top scorer in the Top 14 with 80 points from 15 matches, only 5 players have scored more across the league. Louis is not only a scoring threat but is capable of magical moments from his boot to set up his teammates.

Munster v Stade Francais Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Munster 26-10 Stade Francais

Munster haven’t had the best of times to start their season but will gain confidence from both their victory over the Lions at the weekend as well as the returns of their Ireland Senior Internationals following the conclusion of the International Break.

Stade Francais have fallen off considerably from their performances in the last two seasons in the Top 14 and though they defeated Racing 92 recently, I’m not sure they have the level of consistency to bring that away from home, especially in Thomond Park.

Munster should have enough to see off their challenge relatively easily.

Best Bet: Munster - 12 @ 10/11
