It was a remarkable day for the Irish on Day Two of the Cheltenham Festival with Monkfish surviving a few scares to win the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase for trainer Willie Mullins.
The talented 7-year-old son of Stowaway stretched his unbeaten record over fences to five by beating Fiddlerontheroof by 6½ lengths to justify his short odds of 1/4. There were a few hairy moments for favourite backers but once he survived the final jump, it was all over as he opened his lead towards the top of the Prestbury Park hill.
BoyleSports have since made Monkfish 5/1 to win the 2022 Gold Cup with a bright future being well backed for Mullins' superstar.
Bob Olinger had already got the Irish off to a winning start by landing the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle under Rachael Blackmore for trainer Henry de Bromhead.
Under a very cool and tactical tide from Blackmore, the 6/4 favourite pulled away from his rivals to win by 7½ lengths, getting the bookies off to a rocky start. Bob Olinger is now 5/2 to land the 2022 Marsh Novices’ Chase following his impressive victory.
