Mick McCarthy is the frontrunner in the betting to be the new Republic of Ireland manager after it was announced on Wednesday morning that Martin O’Neill had vacated the position.
O’Neill, along with his assistant Roy Keane, parted company with the Irish side ‘by mutual agreement’ after a meeting with the FAI on Tuesday night.
We have chalked up McCarthy, who left Ipswich at the end of last season, as an Even money shot to take back the job he left in November 2002 following Republic of Ireland’s World Cup campaign in Japan and South Korea.
Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny, who has four league titles under his belt at the League of Ireland club, is the second favourite to land the job and has already been cut into 3/1 from 6/1 since the market opened on Wednesday morning.
Short-lived England manager Sam Allardyce is 10/1 having begun his managerial career in Ireland at Limerick.
Other contenders include recently unemployed Steve Bruce and Hibs boss Neil Lennon (both 20/1), while Harry Redknapp will be oblivious to his current 33/1 chances as he continues his stint in the jungle as favourite to win I’m A Celebrity Get Me Outta Here.
