Micheál Martin is increasingly likely to launch a bid to become Ireland’s next President according to the odds from BoyleSports, who has cut the Tánaiste into 4/1 joint favourite from 7/1 to succeed Michael D Higgins.

The role will change hands next year when Higgins’ second term comes to an end and punters are growing more confident that Martin will set his sights on Áras an Uachtaráin after the next general election, which Taoiseach Simon Harris insists will happen early in 2025.

Fianna Fáil’s general election prospects have improved according to the latest market moves following the local election results in June, with their chances of winning more seats than any other party more than halved into 3/1 from 7/1. However, Martin’s leadership is certain to come into question should election favourites Fine Gael (11/10) and Sinn Féin (6/5) return from the polls with a higher seat haul as the odds predict.

“The opinion polls make slightly better reading for Fianna Fáil of late, but punters are still expecting Micheál Martin to follow the trend of party leaders bowing out. That would certainly increase speculation around a bid for the Áras and he’d have to be a leading contender if his hat goes in the ring.”

Next Irish President Favourites

Another former Taoiseach is thought to be eyeing the Presidential position as Bertie Ahern is also a joint 4/1 favourite along with outgoing EU Commissioner Mairead McGuinness. Less likely winners of the 2025 Presidential race include Conor McGregor, who is the same price as former All-Ireland winner Joe Brolly at 33/1, while RTÉ exile Ryan Tubridy is a huge outsider at 200/1.
