The Dutchman looked back to his best after producing an eye-catching performance to beat Gerwyn Price 18-14 at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool and lift the Phil Taylor Trophy along with a top prize of £200,000.
The Iceman had raced into a 4-0 lead, but he wasn’t able to hold off van Gerwen who went agonisingly close to hitting a 9-darter.
Price himself hit a nine-darter in his semi-final against Danny Noppert, so it’s safe to say the Welshman is back to some of his best form.
BoyleSports reacted to the World Matchplay result by cutting van Gerwen into 7/2 from 4/1 favourite to win his fourth World Championship, while Price is 4/1 from 5/1 to lift the Sid Waddell Trophy for the second time.
Belgian star Dimitri Van den Bergh enjoyed a brilliant World Matchplay reaching the semi-finals after dethroning defending champion Peter Wright.
Van den Bergh was beaten by eventual winner van Gerwen, but his World Championship odds have been trimmed into 11/1 from 16/1.
Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: “Michael van Gerwen’s chances of winning the World Championship are on the move as we had to cut him into 7/2 from 4/1 after his World Matchplay win.
"Gerwyn Price was also sensational in reaching his first ever Matchplay final and his return to World Number 1 has seen him clipped into 4/1 from 5/1 to win another World title at the Alexandra Palace.”
