Michael D Higgins is expected to attract more than 60% of the first preference votes, according to our Irish Presidential Election betting for this month’s poll.
Higgins this week released a 60-second video outlining his plans, should he be elected for a second term, and he is a hot 1/9 favourite to win the election ahead of 6/1 Sean Gallagher.
Gallagher’s Presidential pitch picked up some negative feedback on social media and it has done nothing to improve his chances of closing the gap on the runaway favourite.
We have it as a close call at 5/6 apiece whether Higgins comes in just above or below the 64% mark when the first preference votes are counted. That would signal a huge improvement on his showing in the 2011 election, when he attracted 39.6% of the first preference votes compared to Gallagher’s 28.5%.
