The Course

We’re at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, the home of Jack Nicklaus.

It’s a 7,392 par 72 designed by Nicklaus himself and they’ve played this tournament every year here since 1976. They played two events here in 2020 when Collin Morikawa won the Workday Championship as well.

The winners tend to be top quality ball strikers; Tiger Woods has won here five times. There also have been victories for Justin Rose, Hideki Matsuyama, Jon Rahm and Patrick Cantlay.

Jon Rahm was also six shots clear last year when he had to withdraw due to Covid.

The Favourites

I can’t back Jon Rahm (8/1, 10 places) at single figures in this sort of company.

He’ll get it back as he’s such a class player. But, aside from the Mexico Open win in a weak field, I haven’t seen enough from Rahm to recommend him at those odds.

Best Bet

Rory McIlroy (8/1) however has finished in the top ten here four times and he returns to Muirfield Village in excellent form. He finished 2nd at The Masters, 5th at the Wells Fargo and most recently 8th at the USPGA.

McIlroy got off to a great start at the USPGA and faltered a bit, but it shows his game is in great order.

There may be a confidence issue at majors, but he’s still adept at winning PGA Tour events.""

I’m not concerned about him getting over the line in these types of events and this is one he’d like to tick off his list.

He’s finished 13th or better in seven of his last nine starts worldwide and his all-round game is in excellent shape.

He ranks third in strokes gained off the tee this season. The big worry is usually his approach play, but he’s really dialled in at the moment.

He’s been 15th or better in strokes gained approach in his last three starts. A similar long game performance should see him go close.

Next Best

The main danger I think is Will Zalatoris (20/1). He missed the cut last week, but we can forgive him that after the disappointment of the USPGA play-off. Muirfield Village is big boy’s golf course for players who thrive tee-to-green and Zalatoris is certainly in that category.

His best performances have all come at major golf courses and he leads the tour this year in strokes gained tee-to-green.

He’s one of the best iron players on tour and former winners like Cantlay, Morikawa and Rahm were all the same when they won.

The putting stroke is still a worry, but anything close to an average putting performance will likely see him go close. He’s ready to win.

Like Sam Burns last week, Max Homa (28/1) is a man who knows how to win big tournaments.""

Homa has that long game prowess which should be a great fit for Muirfield Village. He won the 2019 Wells Fargo at Quail Hollow. This is a real ball striker’s golf course which suits tee-to-green players.

His ability to handle a big test was shown when winning the 2021 Genesis Invitational at Riviera in a strong field.

He has won since, a second Wells Fargo this time at TPC Potomac and he was 13th at the USPGA, his best major finish.

Homa is not afraid of any competition and 23rd was solid last week. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t go well again.
