Masters champ falls behind Scheffler & DeChambeau
Rory McIlroy has dropped to third favourite for this week’s US Open at 9/1 with BoyleSports as he bids to bag a second major of the season at Oakmont in Pennsylvania.
The Holywood man ended a near 11-year wait when he added a fifth major title to his resumé with victory at the Masters in April, but has since admitted a struggle with motivation after donning the famous green jacket, while last week’s missed cut at the Canadian Open (149th) after 36 holes) was the worst finish of his entire PGA Tour career.
McIlroy is now hoping he can bounce back at Oakmont, a venue of note for fans of Shane Lowry, who led the 2016 US Open at the same course by four shots going into the final round, before eventually finishing runner-up to Dustin Johnson.
Lowry, who also revisits the scene of his 2019 Open Championship victory next month when the tournament returns to Royal Portrush, is a popular each-way pick at 28/1, but punters are expecting a hot trend to continue, with eight of the last ten US Opens going to the home contingent.
American duo Scottie Scheffler (5/2) and Bryson DeChambeau (13/2) are rated more likely winners than McIlroy according to the oddsmakers, with Xander Schauffele (18/1) and Collin Morikawa (22/1) also expected to warm to the tough conditions expected to be offered up by the USGA this week.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said:
“We’re anticipating the stiffest of tests at Oakmont and Rory McIlroy’s form since the Masters isn’t filling punters with confidence. Instead, they’re putting their faith in the stars and stripes with a clear swing in support towards the home favourites.”
