The Form - Mayo v Louth

Mayo’s Form

Mayo started the 2023 season in excellent fashion topping the league phase of Division 1 with a record of four wins, two draws and one defeat that defeat came in the final round of fixtures having already qualified for the League Final they were beaten 0-14 to 2-14 by Monaghan.Mayo also had the best attack in the division scoring 126 points across their seven matches an average of 18 points per game. They faced Galway in the League Final where they beat their Connacht rivals in a 0-14 to 0-11 scoreline at headquarters. After securing the Division 1 title Mayo went into the Connacht Championship fancied by many but fell to a shock defeat at the first hurdle to Roscommon in McHale Park on a scoreline of 2-08 to 0-10.That Roscommon loss meant that Mayo had a long wait for their first game in the All-Ireland series and there were question marks around the team going into their first game against Kerry. The Kingdom were the strong favourites in that game but Mayo shocked them by handing them their first defeat in Killarney since 1995 and in the process declared themselves as serious contenders for this year's All-Ireland.Despite that surprise defeat to Roscommon, Mayo come into this game against Louth as one of the form teams in Ireland after an impressive spring which they showed was no fluke with their convincing win down in Killarney.

Louth’s Form

Louth entered the 2023 League Campaign in Division 2 following their promotion from Division 3 last season where they won the topped the league section of the competition along with the League Final. The Wee County gave a strong showing in Division 2 where they came in third place. They even went into the final round of the league with the chance to book a spot in the final but were unable to beat Dublin in that game.In the end they finished behind Derry and Dublin but notably ahead of Cork after winning four and losing three of their seven matches. While Louth had only the fifth-best attack in the Division with 102 points scoring an average of 14.57 points per match. However, where they really shone was defensively. Mickey Harte’s men conceded 99 points an average of 14.14 points per game. This was the Division's fourth-best defence but was only 1 point worse than Kildare’s total of 98 and only four less than Dublin’s total of 95 points.Louth commenced their Leinster Campaign by defeating Westmeath in a closely fought 1-11 to 2-10 score before a serious battle with Offaly in which they needed extra-time to get over the line.Unfortunately for Louth, they met a rampant Dublin in the final losing out 0-15 to 5-21 in a game that was over as a contest by half-time.They were handed a tough draw in Group 1 of the All-Ireland Series with Cork, Mayo and Kerry. The big game for Louth was always going to be their matchup against Cork with the winner of that game likely to qualify in third out of this group.Sadly from a Louth perspective they lost that game on a scoreline of 1-19 to 1-17 which means they will have to take the scalp of either Mayo or Kerry to have any chance of qualifying out of the group.Welcome To The BoyleSports Blog & News SiteLet’s reward you with some Free Bets!Sign up to BoyleSports in Ireland & GET €40 FREE BETS WHEN YOU BET €10! Key Players To Watch

Ryan O’Donoghue

The Belmullet corner forward is Mayo's main attacking threat and has established himself as one of the best attackers in the country. During the league he topped the Division 1 scoring charts hitting a tally of 2-30 across his eight matches which was an average of 4.50 points per match. In Mayo's shock defeat to Roscommon he hit just the 0-2 with both points coming from frees. However, he was back in top form against Kerry hitting 0–5 (0–2f).

Ciaran Downey

The Louth centre-forward was their top-scoring player in their victory over Offaly with a total of 0-7 in the game and most impressively all of his scores came from play.In the Leinster Final he only hit a single point and two against Cork last time out. If Louth are to win this one Downey will need to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Mayo v Louth Odds

The oddsmakers are making Mayo heavy favourites as we get closer to Sunday’s big game, and they can be currently gotten at odds as short as 1/14.Louth, despite their newfound form and consistency under Mickey Harte, are currently priced at 17/2 to win on Sunday while the draw is a massive 14/1.The handicap for the game is Mayo -9 at EVS.

Mayo v Louth Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Mayo 1-18 Louth 0-15Mayo enters this match as justified big favourites following their impressive victory against Kerry in the opening round of the All-Ireland Series which should put their disappointing Connacht Championship campaign behind them.Louth, to their credit, have improved immensely under Mickey Harte and have been more than competitive in nearly every match they have played this season no matter what the competition. Dublin are the only side to have beaten them by more than 3-points this season doing so in the League and the Leinster Final. With all that being said, Division 1 Champions Mayo should have far too much class for Louth come this weekend as they look to build on their confidence from their opening-round victory against Kerry. What remains in question for me is if they can be as comfortable as Dublin were and beat them by as much as Dublin.I think Mayo will get the win but Louth can keep it closer than many might expect them too.The other game TV game this Sunday is Donegal v Derry and you can find our preview of that game in our Donegal v Derry Prediction post.Best Bet: Mayo Winning Margin 4-6 @ 4/1Click Below For All Our Mayo v Louth OddsMayo v Louth Odds - All-Ireland Group Stage 2023
