Austin O’Malley & Andy Moran in the frame for vacancy
James Horan is being backed to return for a third stint in the Mayo Senior Football hotseat after Kevin McStay’s reign was brought to an end following a county board meeting on Wednesday evening.
Stephen Rochford had taken the reins on an interim basis after McStay stepped back in May due to health reasons, but the board are now on the hunt for a new boss after Mayo’s All-Ireland campaign was ended by a last-gasp Donegal score in Roscommon a fortnight ago.
Moran Switch Inbound?
Former manager Horan, who led the county to four All-Ireland finals during his previous two spells in charge, is one of three co-favourites installed by BoyleSports in the early betting at 7/4, along with Austin O’Malley and Andy Moran.
Former forward Moran is a current selector and coach with All-Ireland quarter-finalists Monaghan, while O’Malley’s stock is high, having led Cuala to All-Ireland Club glory earlier this year.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said:
“Punters clearly aren’t against the idea of a sensational return for James Horan, but Austin O’Malley and Andy Moran bring a fresh set of credentials so this one could go right down to the wire."
