Taoiseach Micheál Martin has admitted he got it wrong when suggesting Sinn Féin were given access to an RTÉ interview with Shane Ross which was never broadcast, but warned of a ‘chilling effect on media and broadcasters’ when they are sued.

The ongoing row however has done little to damage Sinn Féin’s election prospects according to Irish punters, as their status as hot favourites for the next election strengthened at the weekend when we slashed them into 1/12 from 1/3. Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have now been cut adrift in the betting at 8/1 apiece.

The move puts Mary Lou McDonald firmly in pole position to be elected Taoiseach as the Sinn Féin President has now sunk further into 2/7 from 1/2, putting her well clear of 7/2 shot Leo Varadkar.
