Mares Hurdle Preview

When is the Mares Hurdle?

The Mares Hurdle is set to take place at 16:10 on the first day of Cheltenham.

Mares Hurdle Distance

The race is run on the Old Course at Cheltenham over a distance of about 2 miles and 4 furlongs (2 miles, 3 furlongs and 200 yards, or 4,005 metres), with ten hurdles to be jumped.

Mares Hurdle Favourite

The favourite to win the 2024 Mares Hurdle is the W P Mullins-trained Lossiemouth at odds of 1/2. Those odds imply that Lossiemouth has a 66.7% chance of winning the 2024 Mares Hurdle

Lossiemouth has a near faultless record with six victories and one runner-up finish and its most recent success on Cheltenham's new course last January has the horse as a worthy favourite for this race.

Mares Hurdle Betting

The Mares Hurdle looks to be an example of Lossiemouth (trained by W P Mullins) against the field with her one of the festival-leading fancies with odds of 1/2 suggesting a 66.7% chance of success in this race.

Stablemate Ashroe Diamond at 4/1 is expected to be her closest challenger and the 7-year-old has only been out of the top-three in 1 of her ten races with six wins to her name. Love Envoi for Harry Fry and Mariee’s Rock are 14/1 in the betting. 16/1 bar.

Mares Hurdle Tips

Keith Melrose: Good enough for the Champion Hurdle, this mare is arguably the Willie Mullins banker of the whole week

Tip: Lossiemouth

Mares Hurdle Betting Trends

This is a race which regularly turns out big-priced placers with a runner priced 16/1 or bigger finishing in the first three in eight of the last ten runnings.

Willie Mullins who is hotly fancied to be the Leading Trainer at Cheltenham has trained four of the last ten winners.

Quevega won the inaugural race in 2014 coming into the race fresh, but since then it’s been well-travelled horses who feature at the business end of the race with eight of the last nine winners having between two and five outings that season.
