Man City v Real Madrid Preview

Man City’s Form

For a side which has been so dominant for the best part of a decade but particularly since the appointment of Pep Guardiola in 2016 this season has been a poor season so far by all accounts. City have struggled for form in all competitions with the side currently 5th in the Premier League and also having to settle for a playoff spot in this competition due to their less-than-consistent form in Europe. However, that underperformance has prompted action with over £180 million spent on the squad with Khusanov,  Reis, Marmoush, Bah and Nico all first-team signings.

At the weekend, a heavily rotated City side had to come from behind against League 1 outfit Leyton Orient to book their place in the fifth round with a 1-2 victory following goals from new signing Khusanov and veteran City midfielder De Bruyne. It’ll be interesting if many if any from that side start for this one considering their “A Team” was beaten 5-1 by Arsenal in the previous weekend.

City are yet to spark into life this season and their new signings will need to settle fast if they’re to still fight for silverware.

Real Madrid’s Form

Real had a sensational 23/24 campaign which culminated in a La Liga and Champions League double. It was always going to be interesting to see how they approached the subsequent summer, but they continued in typical fashion with long long-anticipated signing of Kylian Mbappé on a free transfer from PSG which naturally kept expectation levels high at the club.

It’s already been a successful season for the club with victories in the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. Less than consistent Champions League form though means they will need to overcome this blockbuster clash against City if they’re to reach the Round of 16.  Ahead of this game, they had the perfect warm-up for this game in terms of pressure and expectancy when they played out a 1-1 draw with Atlético which kept them top of La Liga.

Both sides have played out competitive games against one another in recent seasons but Real have been more consistent this year which may give them the edge over two legs.

Key Players To Watch

Erling Haaland - Man City

The Norwegian freak of nature has recently agreed on a 9.5-year new deal with Man City, which would take his time at the club to June 2034 so it’s likely we will see him terrorise defences for Man City at the very least until his reported “high” release clause is activated in 2029.

This season he’s scored 25 goals and 2 assists from 33 games in all competitions and after his goal at the weekend, he is 4/1 to score first or 21/20 to score at any time.

Erling Haaland anytime goal – 21/20

Kylian Mbappé - Real Madrid

There was a massive amount of excitement, expectation levels and pressure when Mbappé finally made his move to Madrid from PSG during the summer transfer window.

Despite a slow start to his life at Real Madrid, he has looked like the Mbappé of old in recent weeks scoring a brace in their 4-1 win over Las Palmas a hattrick in their win over Real Valladolid and a goal in their weekend draw against Atlético. That scoring streak takes his season tally to 22 goals and 3 assists in 34 games. He is 9/2 to score first in this game and 11/8 to score at any point.

Kylian Mbappé anytime goal - 11/8

Man City v Real Madrid Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Man City 1-1 Real Madrid

Man City are a difficult side to assess at the moment and whether Pep can mastermind this two-legged playoff tie may be the narrative flip they need to close out the season.

Madrid can never be discounted in Europe but can turn on the style at any point due to their world-class talent.

I can see both these sides cancelling each other out on this occasion.
