Luxembourg v Republic of Ireland Preview
Luxembourg’s Form
Continuity is key for Luxembourg given the fact that Luc Holtz has been in charge of his country since he was appointed as manager in 2010 following a two-year stint with their U21 side. While they’ve never qualified for a tournament, Luxembourg have gotten results against some decent sides with wins over Ireland, Iceland and Bosnia and most recently 1-0 over Sweden last March.
Interestingly the Luxembourgian squad has players glistened across almost every top country in Europe with players in Germany, France, Portugal Poland et al. The name which catches the eye most is the 16-year-old, uncapped Enzo Duarte who’s coming through at Dortmund in Germany. They have four teenagers in their squad and four players in their mid-thirties making it an age-balanced squad.
Last Friday Night they came out on the wrong side of a narrow 0-1 defeat against Slovenia. However, the overall performance was strong, dominating possession with 71% of the ball, 10 shots with 4 on target compared to their opponent's 7 shots and 4 on target. Had the score ended via XG scoreline they’d have won out 1.3 to 1.05 but that moral victory will be scant consolation.
Luxembourg have caused Ireland problems before and will head into this game full of confidence that they can secure another scalp.

Republic of Ireland’s Form
The Boys In Green has been in the doldrums for close to a decade but with every new appointment comes a renewed sense of optimism that this time might be different. Heimir seems to now have found his reigns following a difficult start to his tenure and following their 1-1 draw last Friday Night they remain unbeaten in 2025, if they end it that way, a World Cup playoff will come Ireland’s way at a minimum.
Irish Football has its fair share of tragedies, casualties and deep-rooted issues, but there is a sense now that things could be on the rise. The importance of Domestic Football and the success of the League of Ireland has accelerated through the rise of top young footballers, a loyal and growing supporter base and voices from inside the league like Duff, Kenny and Bradley demanding genuine change, care and investment the case for such is only getting stronger.
On Friday Night Ireland hosted a Senegalese side who were going into the match with the longest unbeaten run in International Football going 22 consecutive games without a defeat. However, they put in a performance of great promise, especially in the first half leading at halftime through Kasey McAteer’s first goal for Ireland before being pegged back by Ismaila Sarr in the 82nd minute. Though they had less possession (43%) and 8 shots for an XG of 0.96 to Senegal’s 14 shots for 1.34, The stats don’t reflect the true nature of how good of a performance this was for Ireland.
While they’ve struggled against Luxembourg before, I think this Irish side has evolved since and they should have enough to get the win away from home.

Key Players To Watch
Gerson Rodrigues - Luxembourg
The Portugal-born Luxembourgian (29) is currently playing his club football with Portuguese Primeira Liga side AVS on loan from Ukrainian side Dynamo Kyiv and has 1 Goal from 5 matches in 189 minutes this season, clearly struggling for game time.
Since debuting back in 2017 he has a record of 23 goals in 71 appearances at international level (including an infamous one against Republic of Ireland supporters may remember). He is priced at 7/1 to score first and is 10/3 to score at any time.
Gerson Rodrigues anytime goal - 10/3

Evan Ferguson - Republic of Ireland.
The Irish “Golden Boy” is seen as the player by many to lead Ireland back to major tournaments. With Ireland, he’s already been capped 21 times and at club level in the UK, he has 97 games already scoring 19 times. Yet his “potential” is largely considered untapped, it’s important to realise he’s still 20 years old.
He had the first difficult season of his career in 24/25 first with Brighton and then again against West Ham where he failed to get given sufficient game time to impress with either. Though his stock has fallen his long-term prospects are as bright as ever. After coming off the bench against Senegal I expect him to lead the line in this game. He can be gotten at 11/2 to score first and 5/2 to score any time.
Evan Ferguson first goal - 11/2

Luxembourg v Republic of Ireland Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Luxembourg 0-2 Republic of Ireland
Luxembourg can’t be underestimated, we’ve seen that before and their win against Sweden earlier this year is evidence of that.
Ireland look to have turned the corner with Heimir, but this will be a big test of their mental ability before their World Cup qualifying campaign begins.
Ireland at EVS looks to me to be an exceptional value play in the betting market
