Limerick v Cork Preview

Limerick’s Form

The Shannonsiders last year commenced in Division 1 Group B of the National Hurling League which they topped the initial league phase following a record of four wins and one draw to book their place into Division 1 A for 2025 and into the league semi-final which they lost in a 1-15 to 3-17 scoreline against Kilkenny,

In the 2024 Munster Championship, they advanced to the Munster Final following three wins with their sole defeat coming against Cork in Cork 3-28 to 3-26. They would triumph in the Munster Final though with a 1-26 to 1-20 win over Clare. Their All-Ireland journey ended in the semi-final losing 0-29 to 1-28 again against Cork.

This year they were mediocre in the league following two wins, 1 draw and three defeats they finished fifth avoiding relegation. In the Munster Championship, they opened in Thurles with a 2-23 to 2-23 draw against Tipperary before they won their first game 0-22 to 0-28 away to Waterford.

Their 2025 Munster Championship run opened with mixed acclaim, drawing their opening game with Tipperary in Thurles 2-23 a piece before a six-point win over Waterford. Remarkably they flew under-the-rader ahead of the Cork game before trouncing them by a sixteen-point margin 3-26 to 1-16 in Limerick. They then ended their Munster Championship round of fixtures with a five-point loss against Clare though their Munster Final appearance had already been secured.

Cork’s Form

The Rebels started 2024 unspectacularly with a record of three wins and two defeats meaning they missed out on a semi-final place by a sole point. Though with the format their wins came against opponents they’d have been expected to beat Wexford, Waterford and Offaly.

Their Munster Championship started poorly with a three-point defeat to Waterford and 2 point loss to Clare. They did click into gear when it mattered the most though with a 3-28 to 3-26 win over Limerick and a 1-21 to 4-30 win over Tipperary to advance into the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-finals. What followed was a nine-point win over Offaly and a five-point victory against Dublin to reach another All-Ireland Final. However, Clare were their undoing again eventually losing out of another victory this time AET in a 3-29 to 1-34 scoreline.

They started 2025 stronger only losing once in Division 1A to reach the league final where they avenged their earlier defeat to Tipperary to win when it mattered 0-23 to 3-24 for a 10-point victory. They opened their Munster Championship drawing away to Clare in the Munster Championship 3-21 to 2-24 before they truly announced themselves with another trouncing of Tipperary this time 4-27 to -0-24 for a 15-point win.

Despite the hype, Cork fell to a hard reality check in Round 4 losing 3-26 to 1-16 against Limerick, meaning they needed a 2-25 to1-22 final round win against Waterford to not only reach this final but avoid being knocked out of the All-Ireland Championship period!

Key Players To Watch

Aaron Gillane - Limerick

Limerick captain and talisman Patrick Horgan turned 37 earlier this month so this might be his last season to land that elusive All-Ireland success that his talents so richly deserve. He’s been Limerick’s highest scorer in the Munster Championship this season with a total of 2-27 for an average of 11 points across his 3 matches.

While Limerick disappointed in their latest showing in Limerick he still managed a tally of 1-9 for the day which was only bettered by Limerick attacker Aaron Gillanes's total of 2-7 on the day. Patrick Horgan remains the game-changer and talisman for Limerick.

Patrick Horgan - Cork

Cork captain and talisman Patrick Horgan turned 37 last month and with Mother Time undefeated 2025 could be his final opportunity to land that elusive All-Ireland success that few would argue his talent so richly deserves. He’s been Cork’s highest scorer in the Munster Championship this season with a total of 3-35 for an average of eleven points across his four matches.

Cork needed to avoid defeat in their final Munster Championship League fixture to continue their All-Ireland prospects and needed a win to reach their first Munster Final since 2018 but they needn’t be worried with his 1-8 total helping Cork to a 2-25 to 1-22 win over Waterford.

Limerick v Cork Prediction & Best Bet

Limerick will be looking to land their seventh successive Munster Championship Final victory on Saturday which would extend their record for most Munster Championships won.

Cork were slaughtered when these sides last faced, but if they can take that reality check with open arms the “underdog” title always seems to serve The Rebels better in recent years.

This should be a far closer game than last time out in the Championship, but this Limerick team is exceptional and I still think they can physically overwhelm Cork and win another title
