Leo Varadkar’s odds on becoming the next Fine Gael leader and next Taoiseach have been slashed after reports that Public Expenditure Minister Paschal Donohoe is set to back the Dublin West TD in the race.
Having been priced at 6/5 before the backing of Donohoe, Varadkar was quickly cut into 8/13 on Tuesday.
However, punters still thought his price was too big and continued to flood us with large bets, forcing traders to further cut him into the new 1/3 favourite to be the next leader of Fine Gael.
As a result, previous favourite Simon Coveney has drifted right out to 2/1 from 4/6.
Fine Gael leadership may not be the only thing on the horizon for the Minister for Social Protection as his odds have also shortened to be Taoiseach after the next General Election.
Varadkar is now the 5/2 second favourite from 10/3 to succeed Enda Kenny as Taoiseach, but Micheal Martin remains at the forefront of the betting at 1/2.
