Derry City v Shamrock Rovers – Friday 7.45 pm,  RTÉ 2

Odds

Derry City @ 6/4

Shamrock Rovers @ 19/10

Draw @ 2/1

Preview

It ‘s been a solid albeit unspectacular start to Derry City’s season with 16 points from their opening 10 games they’re 2nd in the table 5 points behind league leaders Shelbourne. However, there is already a sense of overreliance on new signing Hoban to grab the goals and with only 1 win from their last 5 league they’re in danger of spiralling down what is a tight table at the moment if they lose or even draw,

Shamrock Rovers have silently yet confidently gone about their business creeping up the table in recent weeks with 12 points from their last 5 league games. The only blot in their form was a 2-1 defeat against St Patrick’s Athletic and even in that game, they had the better of the chances with 70% of the ball and 20 shots and 3 big chances compared to Pat’s 9 shots and 1 big chance.

Prediction: Derry City 0-2 Shamrock Rovers

Derry haven’t quite been there this season even if they occupy second spot, but they could make a huge statement of intent for their league title credentials if they could pull off a win on Friday Night.

Shamrock Rovers look stronger recently and their 3-0 showing against Sligo Rovers suggests to me the shackles might be starting to come off in a positive sense for the club again.

Best Bet:  Shamrock Rovers @ 9/5

Bohemians v Drogheda – Friday 7.45 pm,  LOI TV

Odds

Bohemians @ 3/4

Drogheda @ 10/3

Draw @ 13/5

Preview

The Bohemians Reynolds Renaissance is very much underway with 3 wins from his opening 5 games in the dugout including 3 of their last 4 games, The only blots in their form came in his first game 3-1 against Shamrock Rovers with the other coming in his glorified derby against Waterford. Could this season be promising for the club after all or are undergoing another false dawn? Time will tell

Drogheda head into this game with 1 loss in their last 5 league games, albeit that also includes 4 draws which means the only club they have outperformed in that time is bottom-of-the-table Dundalk who have 2 points in their last 5 games. However, while it was goals they initially struggled for they’ve gotten 2 in both their last 2 games and with Pierrot finally getting on the scoresheet against Derry the signs seem far brighter on that front.

Prediction: Bohemians 1-1 Drogheda

Only Shamrock Rovers have more points (12) than their (9) in the last 5 league games and a win with results going in their favour could catapult them to second place and 2 points behind Shelbourne.

Interestingly, Drogheda are unbeaten against Bohemians in their last two games winning 2-1 and drawing 0-0.  This will be another fascinating affair, but I can see the sides cancelling each other out.

Best Bet:  Draw @ 13/5

Galway United v Shelbourne – Friday 7.45 pm,  LOI TV

Odds

Galway United @ 7/5

Shelbourne @ 21/10

Draw @ 19/10

Preview

Galway United were always going to be an interesting case study this season on the difference between the First Division and Premier Division. After dominating the former last year, experienced league winner John Caulfield entrusted a mainly First Division player pool in terms of squad retention and signings to compete in 2024. However, following a strong start 5 points from their last 5 league games suggests a consolidation to where they should be on the table.

League Leaders Shelbourne started the season with a storm which has them currently 5 points clear at the top of the table ahead of Derry City and Bohemians’. However, their form has taken a downturn in recent weeks with 8 points from their last 5 matches suggesting they aren’t quite the dominant force Shels supporters were suggesting.

Prediction: Galway United 0-1 Shelbourne

Two sides not blessed for their most positive brands of football., the quality of this game could have “drab affair” written all over it. With that being said if two sides playing a similar style come up against one another, the team with the “better players” should win more often than not and that’s why I’m edging this for Shelbourne.

Best Bet: Shelbourne @ 21/10

Sligo Rovers v Dundalk– Friday 7.45 pm,  LOI TV

Odds

Sligo Rovers @ EVS

Dundalk @ 5/2

Draw @ 23/10

Preview

Sligo Rovers are coming into this on the back of two successive 3-0 defeats against St Patrick’s Athletic and against Shamrock Rovers. While they wouldn’t have been considered favourites for either game their performance in both will give their supporters cause for concern. Such is the tight nature of the table they could rise or plummet on the table depending on Friday’s results.

Dundalk are bottom of the table and a far cry from the team that was playing in the Europa League only a few seasons ago. However, in their recent performances against Bohemians in their 1-0 loss and the 0-0 draw against St Patrick’s Athletic there were more positive signs, but they’ll need to pick up proper points soon with them already 4 behind Drogheda directly above them.

Prediction: Sligo Rovers 1-1 Dundalk

The last times these played Dundalk received a 0-5 battering at Oriel Park, which will give the home side confidence for this one. However, I don’t there is as much between these sides as that result suggests and this feels like a draw-in waiting.

Best Bet: Draw @ 23/10

St Patrick’s Athletic  v Waterford– Saturday 7.45 pm,  LOI TV

Odds

St Patrick’s Athletic @ 20/23

Waterford @ 10/3

Draw @ 9/4

Preview

St Patrick’s Athletic are another side who have recovered from their early season slump accumulating 8 points from their last 5 league games only less than Shamrock Rovers (12), Bohemians (9) and level with Shelbourne. The signs seem positive for the reigning FAI Cup champions that they can climb the table further in the coming weeks.

Waterford have been solid albeit unspectacular this season and while Keith Longs' side were challenging at the top after the first few matches, there now seems to be a consolation of parity with them falling to 7th and only 1 point ahead of second from bottom Drogheda. Amond has been brilliant though and his goals could keep them out of trouble if they continue.

Prediction: St Patrick’s Athletic 3-0 Waterford

St Patrick’s Athletic looked to have improved considerably in recent weeks and with young and experienced talent in abundance I feel they should be too good for Waterford unless Amond has a masterclass in front of goal which isn’t impossible to fathom.

Sligo Rovers have started the season very well but following a few injuries early in the season and more midweek, this will be a careful time for John Russell to martial his troops in the coming weeks considering their smaller squad size. Galway tend to put themselves in contention in most games and I think they can capitalise on a depleted Sligo to earn a point,

Best Bet: St Patrick’s Athletic @ 20/23
