Shamrock Rovers have had their stereotypical slow start to the Premier Division this season with 6 points from their opening 5 games. However, before the International Break, they earned a deserved away victory against tough nut Galway United in a game where they had 17 shots and 72% of possession to their opponents 9 and 28%.
Bohemians had a turbulent off-season, which resulted in recruitment issues, exacerbated by the loss of Afolabi. There was no surprise when Declan Devine got the bullet 4 games into the season, before the International Break though they had a 2-1 victory over Derry City under interim manager Pat Fenlon. It was announced this week that Alan Reynolds had left his role as Waterford Assistant Manager to land the Bohs role.
Prediction: Shamrock Rovers 3-1 Bohemians
Fireworks are always guaranteed in any edition of the “Dublin Derby” and that’ll be a tough first task for new Bohemians manager Alan Reynolds. While Shamrock Rovers have started slowly, I’m expecting them to kick on in this game in an action-packed thriller.
Best Bet: Shamrock Rovers -1 @6/4

Plenty was expected of Derry City following the arrival of Patrick Hoban and the longest-running transfer saga of the summer. Hoban has duly delivered with 6 Goals from the opening 6 Games of the season which has helped them earn 11 points, trailing Shelbourne by 5 at the top. However, their 2-1 defeat against Bohemians suggests they’ve more gears to come through if they’re to win a league title this season
Galway have taken their dominant form from the First Division and have been able to create a well-drilled side which remains extremely tough to beat even with the step up in quality and John Caulfield and his side deserve credit for that. Galway lost 0-1 against Shamrock Rovers last time out which made it three games without a win.
Prediction: Derry City 2-0 Galway United
Derry haven’t been quite there yet this season, but Hoban has proved a huge difference-maker for them in terms of having a natural goal scorer. Galway are difficult to beat but I think the Hoban factor should be enough to get them a win though.
Best Bet: Derry City Win + Under 2.5 Goals @ 16/5

Waterford have had a decent start to their league campaign with their 8 points from 6 matches putting them comfortably in fourth place at this earlier point of the season. However, recent signs with a 3-0 defeat against Derry and a 0-0 draw against Dundalk their last two results. Keith Long’s side will have targetted this game as winnable at the start of the season though.
Sligo Rovers despite plenty peddling the narrative that Johnny Russell was under pressure and another relegation battle this season. In the early days of the season the club assisted by their new boys like Malley and returns for McGinty and Mata mean their outlook could be more positive for 2024
Prediction: Waterford 0-1 Sligo Rovers
This is already a huge game in the context of both side's seasons and a victory for either could put them clear of their alleged relegation rivals, giving them a positive platform to build on. This’ll be a tight affair and I wouldn’t be shocked if there is a draw but I’m still backing Sligo Rovers for the win.
Best Bet: Sligo Rovers @ 9/5

Odds
Drogheda @ 12/5
St Patrick's Athletic @ 21/20

Drogheda comfortably avoided relegation at the end of last season and following investment from the Trivela Group and signings like Frentz Pierrot in attack it seemed like the club were progressing nicely on and off the field. However, a slow start to the season with 4 points from their opening 5 league games suggests they haven’t quite come together yet.
St Patrick’s Athletic are another club who were expecting to build on their 2023 season where they won the FAI Cup under Jon Daly. Signings like Keating, Turner and Bolger were expected to lessen the losses of Lonergan, Curtis and Murphy. However, it hasn’t quite happened yet for the squad with 6 points from 6 games putting them third from bottom.
Prediction: Drogheda 1-1 St Patrick’s Athletic
Two sides who haven’t had the results nor the performances both their fanbases would’ve wanted to start the season, a loss for either side could have questions asked especially about Jon Daly managing the Pats. I fancy Drogheda for a result in this game, especially at home.

Shelbourne under Damien Duff have started the season with a resoluteness and winning mentality befitting of a Jose Mourinho side, a man who coached Duff at Chelsea the parallels in their coaching style and personalities is uncanny at times. Shelbourne beat Pats 1-2 in their last league game but did suffer their first defeat of the season during the International Break when a rotated side was knocked out of the Leinster Senior Cup Quarter-Final 4-2 against Maynooth.
Donnell’s Dundalk are very much in a bridge of troubled water with 2 points from their opening 5 league games putting them bottom of the table at this early stage of the season. Their 0-0 draw against Waterford at Oriel was followed by a 2-0 defeat against St Mochta’s in the Leinster Senior Cup last week, where they worryingly had a strong side out. If results don’t come sooner rather than later Donnell’s position will be untenable.
Prediction: Shelbourne 2-0 Dundalk
Two sides on entirely deferent trajectories, Duff’s Shelbourne should be far too well-drilled and high in confidence for Dundalk to deal with.
Best Bet: Shelbourne Win + Under 2.5 Goals 12/5
