League of Ireland Football 1

In this post, you can find our League of Ireland Odds + Weekly Acca as we look forward to another action-packed Friday of domestic football.

The League of Ireland Premier Division is as tight as ever! Shelbourne lead the way with 27 points from 15 games despite only having 1 win in their last 5 games. Shamrock Rovers and Derry City are 3 points back after failing to win their last 2 games respectively.

Elsewhere, 4th place Galway United are only 6 points ahead of second from bottom Drogheda while Dundalk are starting to be cut adrift at the bottom of the table with just 9 points to their name.

We’re continuing our domestic coverage with another preview of the weekly action along with a weekly acca for readers to consider!

Shamrock Rovers v St Patrick’s Athletic – Friday 7.45 pm, LOI TV

Odds

Shamrock Rovers @ 4/7

St Patrick’s Athletic @ 9/2

Draw @ 3/1

Preview

There is an air of inevitability by most involved in the League of Ireland on any level that Shamrock Rovers will return to the summit of the table sooner rather than later before going on to win their 5th title in a row. However, as of yet with 41% of their fixtures played due to an incessant injury list, they’re currently 2nd trailing league leaders Shelbourne by 3 points and were shocked 1-3 against Waterford last time out.

St Patrick’s Athletic are a prime example of the topsy-turvy, fickle nature of football with any manager just a poor period away from a sacking. A 1-0 loss against Sligo Rovers on Monday Night was the final nail in the coffin for Jon Daly at the helm despite guiding them to a Cup Final victory last season. Who replaces him at the helm remains to be seen, but there are good players there who could easily climb the table yet.

Prediction: Shamrock Rovers 3-1 St Patrick’s Athletic

The Waterford defeat could be a sign that injuries are finally catching up with a depleted Shamrock Rovers squad. However, even with the players they have to choose from, they can field a starting XI of players that most sides in the league would happily take. Rovers’ should still be far too good for Pats with both sides in their current states.

Best Bet: BTTS + Over 3.5 Goals @ 11/4

Shelbourne V Drogheda– Saturday 7.45 pm, LOI TV

Odds

Shelbourne @ 8/13

Drogheda @ 9/2

Draw @ 5/2

Preview

Damien Duff’s Shelbourne remain at the top of the table with close to 41% of their fixtures played at some point people must start to consider themselves as genuine title contenders this season. Despite 1 victory in their last 5 league games, there seems to be a rugged resilience about them with their 89th-minute equaliser last time out against Derry City could prove crucial at the end of the season.

Drogheda picked up a massive victory on Monday Night when they overcame Dundalk 2-1 in the Louth Derby. That win despite not moving them off second from bottom in the table, did put them 5 clear of their Louth rivals and now within touching distance of Sligo Rovers above them. Drogheda have the worst defence in the Premier Division with 22 goals conceded and the key for them to get out of this situation is tightening up at the back.

Prediction: Shelbourne 1-0 Drogheda

Shelbourne are 2 games without a victory, but their late equaliser against Derry will almost feel like one. They aren’t perfect but even when not performing have a knack for pulling out results which can only bode well for any faint title credentials. Drogheda should be bouncing from their Louth Derby triumph, but this is a much taller task.

Best Bet: Shelbourne Win + Under 2.5 Goals @ 11/5

Derry City v Bohemians – Friday 7.45 pm, LOI TV

Odds

Derry City @ 11/20

Bohemians @ 5/1

Draw @ 14/5

Preview

Derry City missed out on what would have been a crucial win against Shelbourne on Monday Night meaning they are now level on points with Shamrock Rovers and 3 points back of Shelbourne who lead the league. While that point total has them well in contention, I get more of an air of fragility about this Derry side than the two Dublin outfits. However, a win comprehensive here could alleviate any of those immediate concerns.

Bohemians have had another week where there’s been a change to their managerial background team having appointed former Dundalk manager Stephen O’Donnell as assistant manager to Alan Reynolds during the week. This could prove to be a shrewd appointment allowing O’Donnell to focus on coaching and not any other outside interference. But I think it’s too early for him to help end this 3-game winless run.

Prediction: Derry City 1-0 Bohemians

Derry City are a strong side with some brilliant players even if they haven’t found consistency in their performances this season. There remains a solid foundation for a team there and they will fancy their chances against a Bohemians side lacking in stability.

Best Bet: Pat Hoban First Goalscorer @ 7/2

Waterford v Dundalk – Friday 7.45 pm, LOI TV

Odds

Waterford @ 5/4

Dundalk @ 9/4

Draw @ 2/1

Preview

Waterford to their credit have 2 wins on the bounce including a brilliant 1-3 win over Shamrock Rovers on Monday and 8 points from their last 5 league games. However, that solid run of form has only brought them to the lofty heights of 6th on the table 5 off Shamrock Rovers and Derry City but also only 5 clear of 2nd from bottom Drogheda. This is a huge game in the context of their season and a victory could put them safely clear of the automatic relegation spot at a minimum.

Dundalk are in trouble and it’s hard to put it in any kinder words than that. The “surprising” appointment of Noel King has garnered more attention in recent games when it seems to be that King is more of a “watcher” than a proactive “mover” on the sidelines. It’s drawing comparisons to a managerial conundrum Dundalk had a few years ago. That being said, Dundalk do have some good players and are stronger than their 9-point total suggests.

Prediction: Waterford 1-2 Dundalk

Waterford may be proving some of their detractors wrong (as of yet anyway), but they’re also winless from their last 4 home matches. Dundalk need this win far more than Waterford do and I think they might pull a result from the stars, otherwise, they may as well start thinking about First Division football next season.

Best Bet: Dundalk @ 9/4

Galway United v Sligo Rovers – Friday 7.45 pm, LOI TV

Odds

Galway United @ 13/10

Sligo Rovers @ 21/10

Draw @ 11/5

Preview

Galway United are riding high in 4th position and despite having a less-than-desirable style of play, it’s said adaptation that has made them a problem for essentially every side they have faced this season. For that reason, the dynamic duo of Caulfield and Horgan deserve immense credit for their success in the league and 5-game unbeaten run.

Sligo Rovers, following a positive start to their season, slumped to a poor run of results which had many questioning John Russell’s job at the club. Another example of the tight nature of the league and the fickle nature of football. However, their recent victory 1-0 against St Patrick’s Athletic despite an unavailability crisis keeps them in touch with those above them.

Prediction: Galway United 0-1 Sligo Rovers

Galway could pull away from the immediate relegation race with a win in this fixture while Sligo could go level on points with the current 4th-placed side if they win. This screams to me a very tight game on paper, but I fancy Sligo Rovers to pull some sort of result out of the bag on Friday Night.

Best Bet: Sligo Rovers or Draw @ 10/11
