Who won La Liga Last Season (2022/23)?

The 2022/23 La Liga season was the 92nd season of La Liga, Spain's premier football competition. Real Madrid were the defending champions, having won a record 35th title the previous season.

Barcelona were confirmed as champions for the 2022/23 season with four matches to spare following a 4–2 away victory against Espanyol, clinching the club's 27th league title and first since the 2018–19 season.

La Liga 2023/24 Betting Favourites

Real Madrid

The 2022/23 La Liga runners-up and Copa del Rey winners Real Madrid have been installed as Evens favourites for the upcoming 2023/24 La Liga season. If they win this season's title it would be the club's first La Liga title since 21/22 and their 36th La Liga title in total.

Real Madrid has lost some big names from last season's squad, with Marco Asensio, Karim Benzema, Mariano Diaz, and Eden Hazard all leaving. It will be the first time since 08/09 that Benzema will not be in the squad having departed for Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad.

In 14 years the star at the club the French striker won 25 trophies. It will also be the first season for Real Madrid without Marco Asensio since 2015–16.

However, with the return of Brahim Diaz, Fran Garcia, and Joselu, along with the signing of Arda Güler and the headliner Jude Bellingham Real Madrid entered the new La Liga season in great shape.

Real have started their season in scintillating fashion with seven wins from their opening eight league games. The sole blot in their form being a 3-1 defeat against cross town rivals Atlético Madrid.

They currently league La Liga one-point clear of bitter rivals Barecelona. Their star-performer? A certain Jude Bellingham with six league goals and two assists.

Barcelona

The 2022/23 La Liga winners Barcelona have been installed as very marginal second-favourites at 5/4 for the upcoming La Liga season to retain their league title. Last year they were convincing in the league as they ended up winning by ten-points to secure their 28th La Liga title in their history.

That victory came despite Barcelona’s financial troubles off the field, coming off the back of a decade or so of financial mismanagement at the club. The club and manager Xavi have managed to (somehow) continually bring in top signings that resulted in them winning last season’s La Liga following Real Madrid’s victory the previous season.

They have arguably strengthened their squad already from the previous season with veterans Busquets and Alba the only notable departures. They have managed to maintain their positive recruitment with Gundogan, and Iñigo Martínez coming in alongside former player Oriol Romeu returning on an undisclosed fee from Girona. All those deals were completed early in the window

Despite their aforementioned financial issues, that we hypothesized could leave  them selling some of their stars.   Aside from Kessié to Al-Ahli, Dembélé to PSG and Ezzalzouli to Betis for a combined fee of close to seventy million, they kept their core squad.

Furthermore, they brought in João Félix and João Cancelo on loan to strengthen further. While this is a far cry from the “vintage” Barcelona sides from the 2010 era, they are no pushovers and with an unbeaten start of six wins and draws, they will challenge Real all the way this season.

Atlético Madrid

Next up in the betting for the 2023/24 La Liga season is Atlético Madrid at odds of 9/1. Atletico have been the only side who can rival Barcelona and Real Madrid in recent years. They have won La Liga as recently as the 2020/21 season.

Diego Simeone has done nothing short of an exceptional job since coming in December 2011 aside from that season where they finished in fifth place, they have not finished below third in the table.

Their squad will be largely strong this season too with Kondogbia the biggest departure alongside mostly squad or back-up players like Reguilón and Doherty. They spent well this summer with Söyüncü and Azpilicueta amongst the contingent coming in.

However, with Simeone’s side, it is all about the system and the sum of the parts rather than playing free-flowing attacking football it will be more about a robust, ruthless, undying commitment in defence and playing on the counter-attack.

While the Real and Barcelona axis could prove hard to stop, if any club can do it it's Atlético. Their five wins (including their notable victory over Real) one draw and one defeat has them fourth having played one less game than those above them.
