Kerry v Mayo Preview

Kerry’s Form

Kerry entered 2023 following a fantastic 2022 season.  The Kingdom started last season by winning the league dominating Mayo in the final winning by a staggering 15 points. They would then go on to win the Munster Championship by beating Limerick in the final by 23 points and capping it off by beating their opponents for this clash Galway in the All-Ireland Football Final by 4 points.

Naturally much was expected of Kerry in 2023 but they would end up having a stop-start league campaign with only three wins and four defeats in their seven matches. They lost in the opening weekend to a Donegal side who would end up finishing bottom 0-13 to 1-9, they then

it was because of that that their opening weekend defeat to Donegal 0-13 vs 1-9. It continued to be a stop-start campaign for them finishing in fifth position with only three wins and four defeats. They then put Monaghan to the sword in a 3-16 vs 0–14-point victory. That was followed by a 2-14 vs 1-10 defeat from league winners and their opponents in this fixture Mayo, they then defeated 0-12 -0-11 victory over Armagh, lost to Tyrone 1-15 to 2-9 a final weekend defeat to Galway 1-13 to 0-14 meant they did not qualify for the League Final. Kerry coming into on this back of a comprehensive Munster Championship win beating Tipperary 0-25 to 0-5 in the Semi-Final and Clare 5-14 to 0-15 in the Final.

Mayo’s  Form

Mayo started the 2023 season in excellent fashion topping the league phase of Division 1 with a record of four wins, two draws and one defeat that defeat came in the final round of fixtures having already qualified for the League Final they were beaten 0-14 to 2-14 by Monaghan. Mayo also had the best attack in the division scoring 126 points across their seven matches an average of 18 points per game. They faced Galway in the League Final beating their Connacht rivals in a  0-14 to 0-11 scoreline.

Mayo are coming into this fixture after a disappointing Connacht Championship they would have entered the competition as favourites along with Galway. However, they were drawn against Roscommon in the first round Quarter-Final and were surprisingly defeated 2-08 to 0-10 point scoreline, They will need to up their game against The Kingdom if they are to stand a chance of success on Saturday.

Key Players To Watch

David Clifford

David Clifford is arguably not only the best footballer in the country, but you could argue he is the biggest name in GAA full stop right now! He missed The Kingdom’s first game of the season but still managed to finish as the joint top-scorer in the league with an impressive total points tally of 43

He has continued his flying form in the Munster Championship scoring 2-8 in total from the games against Tipperary and Clare. Expect him to be the main man again at the weekend.

Ryan O’Donoghue

The Belmullet Centre-Forward is their main attacking threat, during the league he topped the Division 1 scoring charts hitting a tally of 2-30 across his eight matches which was an average of 4.50 points per match.

In their shock defeat to Roscommon, he hit 0-2 with both points coming from frees, he will need to be in top form at the weekend if they are to beat Kerry I feel.

Kerry v Mayo  Betting Odds

The oddsmakers are making Kerry big favourites as we get closer to Saturday’s big game and they can be currently gotten at 2/5.

Mayo despite being 2023 League Champions a campaign where they defeated Kerry come into this match as 11/4 underdogs while the draw is 8/1.

The handicap for the game is Total Points 34.5 Over 4/5 Under 10/11

Kerry v Mayo Prediction & Best Bet

Kerry enters this match as favourites following their flying form in the Munster Championship albeit those victories came against Tipperary and Clare teams that many would expect them to defeat, they can only beat what was put in front of them which they did comprehensively.

Mayo proved they were no slouches in the League which they would go on to win and despite their defeat last time out against Roscommon it would be foolish to rule out a team which has been fighting it out constantly at the top for years now.

With all that being said I expect home advantage to be key on Sunday for The Kingdom, Kerry are giving signs that they’re beginning to purr and return to the form which saw them dominate the 2022 season and if they do that Saturday I can only see one winner.

Prediction: Galway 0-15 Kerry 1-16

Best Bet: Kerry Winning Margin 4-6 16/5
