Kentucky Derby Betting
Ben Curtis will take the ride on Honor Marie, an 18/1 shot with BoyleSports, in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday night.
The Cork native made the move stateside late in 2023 and racked up over $1.5 million of prize money in Louisiana in the final four months of last year.
With over 1,000 winners under his belt in the UK, the 34-year-old claimed the All-Weather Jockeys’ Championship title in 2020 and secured over a century of winners in five of the last six years.
Having learned his trade with Irish racing royalty, John Oxx, Curtis will look to add to an already stellar CV with a big win at Churchill Downs. A prize pool of $5 million is up for grabs as the jockey takes the mount on the Whitworth Beckman-trained Honor Marie, who was last seen finishing second to the reopposing Catching Freedom (8/1) in the Louisiana Derby.
Frankie Dettori Seeks Kentucky Derby Glory
Frankie Dettori will also have an outside chance aboard Danny Gargan’s Society Man, a 22/1 shot, while Sierra Leone heads the betting at 11/4. Tyler Gaffalione will carry the silks of Coolmore on the Chad Brown-trained colt as he bids to follow up his Blue Grass Stakes win at Keeneland.
The breeding giant has yet to own a winner of America’s most famous race but Todd Pletcher’s Fierceness (3/1) could be a fly in the ointment once again.
The three-year-old was an emphatic thirteen-and-a-half length winner of the Florida Derby at Gulf Park last time out and put in a show-stopping performance in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
Brian O’Keeffe, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said:
“It could be an incredible duel between the top two in the market, Sierra Leone and Fierceness, but eyes on this side of the pond will be drawn to the outsiders as both Frankie Dettori and Ben Curtis will look to spring a surprise.”
