Boxer: Chantelle Cameron
Nickname: Il Capo
Hometown: Northampton, England
Pre-fight record: 18-0-0 (8 KO)
Age: 32
Height: 5ft 6 in (168 cm)
Weight 132.3lb (60kg)
Style: Orthodox
Recognition: Chantelle Cameron is a World Champion in two weight classes and the current super-lightweight WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring champion. She is undefeated from her eighteen pro fights winning eight of them by KO.
It’s because of Cameron's comprehensive victory back in May that Katie Taylor is set to go into a bout as the underdog for the first time. The Bray Boxer comes into this with an awful lot to prove that she can still compete against the best coming up against Cameron (32) who is five years younger than Taylor (37).
As we edge closer to the big fight Cameron has not minced her words with Taylor grabbing more of the attention and headlines despite not being the champion. “I’m the champion and I need to start getting a bit more respect,” said Cameron. She is outspokenly confident about beating Taylor for the second successive time saying Kaie Taylor isn’t going to stand a chance suggesting “I always knew I was wrong for her” vowing to “finish the job”
Katie Taylor (37) is arguably now at a crossroads in her career following her defeat back in May, that may seem outlandish following only her first professional defeat, but that is in part because of the standards she has set as a boxer along with her also not getting younger. But remains confident about her chances Saturday “I have watched the fight, made some adjustments.. I’m not concerned with what Cameron is doing; I’m only concerned with what I can do.”
Taylor is known for her fast-paced, aggressive boxing style, but on a technical level specifically, she is different class to the vast majority if not all other professional boxers. Despite that back in May, Cameron started fast and stayed faster for the opening five rounds before Taylor got going. If she is to stand a chance Saturday she cannot afford the same slow start.
Cameron is the much more powerful striker and could fancy her chances of stopping her opponent early after rocking her on several occasions back in May. Is this a sign of one fighter on the ascendency and one on the decline physically? We will find out the answer on Saturday.
As much as I’d love Taylor to be victorious, Cameron looked to be on another level back in May so she will need to overcome the odds on Saturday. Taylor’s best chance is to box smartly and win via Decision but part of me thinks Cameron could shock Taylor with an early TKO victory, but I hope not.
Prediction: Chantelle Cameron By KO, TKO or Disqualification 7/1
