Katie Taylor has been backed to end the year by scooping RTÉ’s Sports Person of the Year award after she was crowned the undisputed lightweight champion of the world in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The Bray bomber faced a tough battle against Belgian Defline Persoon in Madison Square Garden in New York but was awarded the fight by a narrow margin on the judges’ cards, sparking fury amongst some of the crowd and in her opponent’s corner.

However, with a clean sweep of lightweight belts now in her possession, Taylor is seeing significant support to be decorated with Irish Sport’s Person of the Year accolade in 2019. BoyleSports had retired jockey Ruby Walsh as the 8/11 favourite going into the weekend, but Taylor has been backed into 8/11 from 11/10 making her the new frontrunner for the award.

Walsh, who announced his surprise retirement from the sport after riding Kemboy to victory in the Punchestown Gold Cup, is back out to 11/10 now and is the second favourite, while 8/1 is available for any Dublin senior footballer to get the glory as Jim Gavin’s side seek a historic fifth All-Ireland senior football title in a row.

Tiger Roll’s second consecutive Grand National victory in April mean it’s 12/1 for either the horse himself or trainer Gordon Elliott to be taking the plaudits this December.

There’s been some great Irish sporting highlights already this year...

but Katie Taylor’s achievements have trumped the lot as far as punters are concerned.""

They’ve been coming in their droves to back her for the Sports Person of the Year award meaning we have to make her the new odds-on favourite at 8/11 from 11/10.
