Former Dublin boss kicks on in Áras race
A growing gamble on Jim Gavin means the former GAA boss has plummeted into 5/1 from 33/1 with BOYLE Sports to be elected next President of Ireland after he emerged as one of the Fianna Fáil frontrunners in the race to succeed Michael D Higgins.
The ex-Dublin manager is being well backed to swap the football pitch for the political arena and the latest developments have seen Gavin leapfrog former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern in the betting, becoming third favourite according to the oddsmakers.
Humphreys Leads Market
If the odds are on the money, Fine Gael favourite Heather Humphreys is leading the race for Áras an Uachtaráin after she was supported down to 6/4 following the withdrawal of previous favourite Mairead McGuinness on health grounds.
Labour-backed Independent TD Catherine Connolly is now the only other candidate ahead of Jim Gavin in the betting as 5/2 second favourite.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BOYLE Sports, said:
“It’s fair to say Jim Gavin was on the sidelines just days ago, but his odds have crumbled as punters clearly believe he can go from winning All-Irelands to taking the Áras.”
