Irish Laurels Favourites

Tribal Syd – 5/1

The Murt Leahy-trained son of Droopys Sydney and Myahs Friend is the early favourite at 8/1, these odds imply that the dog has a 16.7% chance of repeating his Tipperary Cup success from last July.

The June 2021 whelp has been on the racing scene since debuting at Clonmel in May 2023 where it finished 3 rd clocking 29.56. However, since then the dog has gone from strength to strength with a record of 12 victories, 5 runner-up finishes and 6 third places from 28 races demonstrating remarkable consistency and winning a total prize pot €25,285.

Ahead of the competition, Tribal Syd clocked a sensational sectional of 3.23 to blow his rivals away, stopping the clock in 28.07 coming 3.5 lengths ahead of Droopys Carbine last month which subsequently led to him being placed as the pre-competition favourite.

He justified his early favouritism in the first round where he went even faster from a sectional of 3.28, he stopped the clock in 28.01 coming 7 lengths ahead of Lemon Mick.

After round one, he’s been CUT in from  8/1 to 5/1 and though he was impressive, he remains too short a price for me.

Crafty Shivoo - 7/1

Crafty Shivoo is not just one of the fastest bitches in training, but one of the fastest dogs around full stop and is currently priced as the 7/1 second favourite implying a 12.5% chance that she lands another major competition after winning the 2023 Irish Oaks and 2023 Gp1 Empress Stakes.

The October 2021 whelp started her racing career running up an unraced stake at Newbridge in March 2023 and finishing 5 th in the final. From 35 races on the track, she has a brilliant racing record of 21 victories, 5 runner-up finishes and 2 third places.

Ahead of the competition, she was found running in a victories effort in the Bombay Bitches Trophy Final at Towcester last June clocking 29.26 for the 547-yard distance, she then ran a fast 17.35 over the 330 distance in her trial and her first look around Curraheen Park at the end of last month.

She showed her class in the opening round breaking out in a 3.31 sectional went first before the first bend and made all to win in 28.36 coming 7 lengths clear of Getup Me Lad.

She’s certainly caught the eye and has been subsequently CUT in from  10/1 to 7/1

The Other Kobe – 7/1

Another 7/1 chance ahead to land the Laurels is no stranger to the racing scene,  Irish Greyhound Derby winner in 2023 The Other Kobe for trainer Graham Holland.

A genuine superstar on the track from 50 races the dog has 22 victories including in the aforementioned Irish Greyhound Derby, 10 runner-up results and 9 third places finishes it's fair to say the dog is consistent!

While he may be approaching the twilight of his career as an April 2020 whelp, there is no doubt the son of Ballymac Best and Mountaylor Queen has the gears even if he finished 5 th on the same track and distance last month pre-competition.

He put that defeat right in the opening round though from a 3.28 section and #6 he made all to win in a rapid 28.02 coming 8.5 lengths ahead of Bambis Lady.

There is life in the old dog yet and his price has been subsequently CUT from from  12/1 to 7/1 to add to his insane prize-money tally of €153,170.

Road Exile – 10/1

Next in the betting to land the Laurels in the coming weeks is the Pat Buckley-trained son of Deerjet Sydney and Trusted Exile who has previously won the 2024 Cork SuperSprint and 2023 Kingdom Derby Tralee in 28.02.

The May 2021 whelp has been a consistent performer on the track since winning on his debut at Youghal track in September 2022 when he won in 29.22. His overall record on the track is a brilliant 25 victories, 7 runner-up finishes and 9 third places from 51 races so has only been outside of the trio places on 10 occasions.

Before the commencement of the Laurels last month the dog ran up the Bar One Sprint Final in Dundalk where he finished third and 5 and ¼ lengths behind winners Broadstrand Syd and he took that form into this competition in 28.26 from a sectional of 3.23 to beat Droopys Polish by 4 lengths.

Evolution – 12/1

Another major contender to land the Laurels is the lightly raced son of Ballymac Cashout and Ballymac Cams for trainer Owen McKenna with odds of 12/1 suggesting a 7.7% chance of success.

One of the newest names on the Greyhound Racing scene and already one of the quickest, the October 2022 whelp only commenced his racing career at Cork last June where he finished 3rd in an Open Unraced, he would go on to run up all four rounds of the competition coming 4th in the final.

The dog arguably flew under the radar ahead of this competition, but following a first-round success where he took a flyer in 3.34 to make all and win in a fast 28.20 coming 3 lengths ahead of runner-up Hazelhill Bucko.
