Irish Greyhound Laurels Final Preview

Trap (1) – Solo And Go

Solo And Go – 5/4

Wearing the red jacket on Saturday Night will be the son of Ballymac Best and Ballymac Minton, Solo And Go, for trainer Liam Dowling, for famous Kerry footballers David and Paudie Clifford.

The August 2023 dog commenced his racing career at Curraheen Park when he showed his explosive potential, winning in 28.44, though he did go winless in his next six across the country.

Following a fortunate fourth-place finish in the opening round to qualify by the skin of his teeth, he’s since gone from strength to strength in the competition. He won the following week in 28.25 and in the last couple of weeks has finished runner-up in 28.09 and 28.51.

Looks to be ideally drawn for the final , and if he can pop from traps like he has throughout the competition, he will be a major player on Saturday Night.

Trap (2) – Ballymac Brendan

Ballymac Brandan - 10/1

The next dog lining out on Saturday’s Final will be the son of Ballymac Kingdom and Ballymac Art, Ballymac Brandon, who is owned, trained and was bred by Liam Dowling.

Born in January 2024, he is the youngest of Saturday’s Finalists and only debuted in Dundalk midway through July, where he won over 400 yards in a swift 21:13. He would make the Irish Sprint Cup Final in the end, where he finished fourth.

Following some flying form in Tralee and some solid excursions in Shelbourne Park, he entered the Laurels with a growing reputation. He duly obliged in the opening round, winning in 28.31, followed by a runner-up 28.52 run, a 28.23 success and last week earned an all-important final qualifying position in 28.58.

Despite his enormous potential, he will likely need to find a few lengths as well as a little bit of luck if he’s to win Saturday’s Final.

Trap (3) –Ballymac Setanta

Ballymac Setanta – 6/4

Lining out in Trap (2) for Saturday’s Final is another Ballymac-trained greyhound, this time the son of Ballymac Kingdom and Ballymac Art, Ballymac Setanta, who is another owned, trained and bred by Liam Dowling.

The January 2024 dog started at the Irish Sprint Cup in Dundalk, running up three rounds, before returning to win three times in Limerick, first in 18.51 for the sprint and the 28.47 for the 525 trip, and then going quicker to win in 28.40. Following two unsuccessful sprints in Shelbourne Park..

Though lightly-raced heading into the event, he’s been simply faultless throughout, going unbeaten with four heat victories first in 27.94 and 28.09, before taking his campaign to another level in the quarterfinals from a 3.24 sectional he won in a sensational 27.81, equalling the Track Record. In the semi-final, he then won in 27.99.

Setanta has been the star of the competition and is the dog to beat on Saturday.

Trap (4) –Magical On Fire

Magical On Fire – 8/1

In the coffin box on Saturday will be the daughter of Ballymac Cashout and Burgess Sarah for trainer Pat Guilfoyle.

The September 2023 bitch debuted on the racing scene at Shelbourne Park last March, where it won against ON2 company in 28.23, and following races across the country in Dublin, Limerick, Cork, and Galway has 6 wins, 3 runner-up runs and 2 third place finishes from 15 outings.

In the opening round of the event, she clocked 28.21 in behind Droopys Patriot and Unanimous Leo. She settled for runner-up behind Solo And Go in the next round, being beaten 1 length in 28.25 before coming further alive in the quarter, a sensational 27.89 success. Last weekend, she qualified 3 lengths behind Ballymac Setanta, who won in 27.99.

Hard draw to overcome, but if he can break quickly, a 27.99 clock would win most finals.

Trap (5) –Trionas Tribe

Trionas Tribe– 50/1

Triona Tribe is the son of Burgess Bucks and Trionas Tune and is owned and trained by the Wren-Sull-Wallman Syndicate.

The oldest of Saturday’s finalists was born in June 2022 and made his debut in March 2024 at Tralee when winning a sprint in 17.71. He’s since been seen across the country, Kerry, Cork, Limerick and Tipperary. He has amassed a career record of 10 victories, 6 runner-up runs and 9 third-place finishes from 41 races.

Trionas Tribe has continued to defy the odds to qualify throughout this event through his strong running style, coming in third place in four successive rounds throughout in 28.66, 28.67, 28.89 and 28.41 last weekend, notably coming from a 3.38 sectional.

Broke far faster last week but will need to replicate his 3.35 best away to figure for this final.

Trap (6) –Lemon Joey

Lemon Joey– 5/1

Wearing the stripes Saturday is the son of Ballymac Best and Lemon Ariana, who is trained by Murt Leahy.

Born in January 2023, he’s been on the racing circuit since September 2024 in Kilkenny and has a record of 12 wins, 9 runner-up finishes and 6 third-place finishes, coming more often than not in top-class company with career highlights of reaching the 2025 Produce Stakes Final, the Gold Cup Final in 2024.

In the opening round, he was unlucky in defeat, being beaten a neck by Ballymac Brandon in 28.31. He followed that up in round two with a 28.42 win. In the third round, he finished runner-up 3.5 lengths back of Magical On Fire, still clocking 28.17, and last weekend started fast and made all to win in 28.09

Has the pace to go close here , and his early pace is very likely to put him in contention.
