Ballymac Setanta -2/1

Ballymac Setanta - 2/1

Favourite for the 2025 Laurels in Curraheen Park is Ballymac Setanta, who is the son of Ballymac Kingdom and Ballymac Art and is trained by Liam Dowling at odds of 2/1.

The January 2024 dog started at the Irish Sprint Cup in Dundalk, running up three rounds, before returning to win three times in Limerick, first in 18.51 for the sprint and the 28.47 for the 525 trip, and then going quicker to win in 28.40.

Following two unsuccessful sprints in Shelbourne Park, he came into the Laurels as one of the more lightly raced hounds in the field with just eight races to his name. However, experience was not his Achilles heel yet anyway, winning his opening two heats of the competition in 27.94 and 28.09, respectively.

He took his campaign to another level last Friday Night when from a 3.24 sectional break, he would go on to win in a sensational 27.81 time which equalled the Track Record for the 525 yard trip. Following that record equaling run , it's fair to say this dog can replicate it against the best and on current running he's a worthy favourite.

Solo And Go – 5/2

Solo And Go – 5/2

Next in the betting with odds of 5/2 for outright success is another Ballymac-bred and trained greyhound, this time the son of Ballymac Best and Ballymac Minton, Solo And Go for GAA Superstars David and Paudie Clifford.

The August 2023 dog actually made his debut on the racing scene at Curaheen Park last Mat when he showed enormous pace and potential to win in 28.44, though he did go winless in his next six scattered across Cork and Shelbourne Park before winning the Juvenile Derby Consolation Final in 28.33

He then ran up three rounds of the BOYLE Sports Irish Greyhound Derby, a winless effort in Cork, before winning again at Shelbourne, this time in a swift 28.28. After fortunately qualifying in the opening round of the Laurels in fourth, he was back to his best in the second round , winning in 28.25.

Solo And Go was an impressive runner-up behind his kennelmate Ballymac Setanta last weekend to finish four lengths back and still clocking a swift 28.09.

Showed his potential in-behind last week if Setanta was to make any mistake Solo And Go has more than enough pace to win this competition.

Droopys Patriot – 7/2

Droopys Patriot – 7/2

Third favourite for Laurels success in the next couple of weeks is the Robert G. Gleeson son of Dorotas Wildcat and Droopys Alyssa, with odds of 7/2, suggesting a 22.2% chance of success.

The August 2023 whelp started his racing career in Tralee earlier this year when he successfully navigated three rounds before landing the Juvenile Classic, winning in a swift 29.21. That was followed by an excursion to Dundalk in July, again finding his way to the final, this time qualifying through four rounds, but this time he had to settle for runner-up after being beaten by Southwind Wild by a short head.

More recently, he won his opening round heat in the BOYLE Sports Irish Greyhound Derby in 29.30 before going winless in his next three. He headed to the Laurels as one of the pre-market favourites, and he’s quickly shown why with two sensational successes in both 27.99 and 28.09.

He continued his unbeaten Laurels campaign last Friday Night to win in 28.28 finishing 5.5 lengths ahead of Faypoint Harvey.

Despite success last week Droopys Patriot remains priced at 7/2 and is good value bet at that.

Unamious Leo– 6/1

Unanimous Leo – 6/1

Another major contender for glory in this competition is Unanimous Leo who is the son of Glengar Bale and Nice Mystery who is trained by Pat Buckley.

The October 2023 dog has been a consistent scorer on the Open Racing scene since debuting in Kilkenny last May when he went on to win their Champion Unraced Stake. From 16 races he's now been victorious 4 times, runner-up on 7 occasions, 3rd three times and has never been outside the top-four in a single race.

He's quietly gone about his business in this competition finishing runner-up in three successive rounds in 28.20, 28.61 and 28.37 displaying remarkable consistency.

Not without a chance and certainly offers value at odds of 6/1.

Other Contenders

Other Contenders

Magical On Fire is priced at 8/1 for trainer Pat Guilfoyle following his breathtaking 27.89 win last weekend in the third round.

Ballymac Brendan is priced at 10/1 this time for trainer Liam Dowling and has already won 2 of his 3 heats in the competition.

Rounding off the market leaders is Lemon Joey for Murt Leahy the January 2023 son of Ballymac Best and Lemon Ariana finished only 3.5 lengths back of Magical On Fire last weekend.
