New Favourite In Betting Shake-Up
Cheap Sandwiches is the new favourite to win the BOYLE Sports Irish Greyhound Derby following a significant shift in the betting with the sponsors.
Even before the traps flew open on last weekend’s third round, the unfortunate exit of pre-race favourite Bockos Diamond left the outright betting wide open, as the mantle of favourite briefly fell to Bombay Pat. But his reign was short-lived as he could manage only fourth behind a brilliant performance from Ballymac Stud, who stole the show with a powerful victory in Saturday’s fifth heat. Odds of 33/1 on Liam Dowling’s runner quickly vanished and he is now 8/1 third favourite to go all the way.
Proper Heiress A Proper Contender
However, it’s last year’s runner-up Cheap Sandwiches (5/2 from 12/1) who is rated the dog to beat after a thrilling duel with the much-fancied UK raider Proper Heiress. Graham Holland’s runner was edged out by a length, but still did enough to shade favouritism over the Mark Wallis-trained Proper Heiress, who is a 7/2 shot (from 12/1) to be crowned the first UK-trained winner of the BOYLE Sports Irish Greyhound Derby since Toms The Best in 1997.
The spotlight will shine firmly on the two market leaders in this weekend’s quarter-final heats, with Cheap Sandwiches a 1/2 shot in the opening contest, while Proper Heiress is priced at 8/11 in heat three to keep his unbeaten run in the competition intact.
