The BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby, one of the most prestigious events in the international Greyhound racing calendar, kicks off this Friday, October 18th at Shelbourne Park.
Ahead of the action we took the chance to catch up with UK-based David Mullins who trains the highly regarded March On Freddie who is heading over to Dublin with his eyes on Irish Greyhound Derby glory.
No relation to powerhouse horse racing trainer Willie Mullins, namesake David will be sending a runner over for only the third time when March On Freddie takes to the track.
Mullins gives us his take on why he believes that March On Freddie, a winner of seven of his ten races in his career, has what it takes to claim Irish Greyhound Derby glory. He also offers insight into why this year’s later staging of the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby has helped and how March On Freddie’s preparations are coming along for the big event.
The Right Dog to Compete In BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby Doesn't Come Around Often
You’ve got to have the right dog – and in my 30-year career of training greyhounds in my own right, I’ve only had three dogs I’ve felt you could have a go with.
The first was Pottos Storm who I brought over some 25 years ago but who had no luck in the first round. The next was Tenpin a few years back, but he suffered a setback just a few weeks before the Irish Derby started so that put paid to that. The third is March On Freddie (14/1 to win the 2024 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby) who has excited us all.

Late Date For Irish Derby Has Given Us a Chance
The UK greyhound scene is so busy that to come away from the business for such a period of time makes things difficult – but actually October heading into November just eases off a touch. There are still competitions, of course, but it just seems less frenetic and that’s given us a chance.
March On Freddie's BIGD Preparations
Rachel [Wheeler, March On Freddie’s breeder in Co. Tipperary] bred the dog, so the connection is obvious and the family have been fantastic. We’ve settled in well – Freddie especially – and while you never look too far ahead we’ll be here for as long as Freddie is in the Derby.
