Fine Gael are closing in on Sinn Féin in the betting to win most seats at the next Irish general election after BoyleSports trimmed their chances into 2/1 from 9/2 following an opinion poll boost for leader Simon Harris.
The Irish Times Ipsos MRBI poll indicated a post-Varadkar bounce for Fine Gael, who went up four points to 23%, while support for Sinn Féin dropped six points to leave both parties level in the popularity stakes. Harris has also been backed down to 9/4 from 4/1 to be Taoiseach after the next visit to the ballot box, putting him hot on the heels of 10/11 favourite Mary Lou McDonald.
The chances of Sinn Féin emerging with most seats from the next general election remain odds-on at 4/9, but their grip on favouritism has weakened since the start of the year when they were hot 1/6 shots. Fianna Fáil, who were unchanged at 20% in the latest survey, would be 11/2 third favourites if the election was called today.
The swing in the figures also means a majority of punters are now expecting to be called to polling stations before the end of the year, with a 2024 vote now favoured at 8/11 as opposed to an election in early 2025 (Even money).
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said:
“The general election outcome looked like a foregone conclusion a few months ago if the odds were anything to go by, but this is the biggest swing in some time and punters are bracing themselves for a close run thing.”
