Bookies Back Buckley for Blockbuster Award
Kerry star Jessie Buckley is being heavily backed to bring a Golden Globe back to Ireland this weekend, with BOYLE Sports making the Killarney native a red-hot favourite to scoop one of Hollywood’s biggest honours.
Buckley, who plays Agnes in Chloé Zhao’s acclaimed Hamnet , is a runaway 1/20 favourite to win Best Actress in a Drama, giving her a 95% chance of topping the bill at Sunday night’s gala. Her nearest rivals, Renate Reinsve (8/1) and Jennifer Lawrence (16/1), are being left in her wake according to the oddsmakers.
There could be more Irish celebrations on the night, although Paul Mescal faces an outside shot at 25/1 to triumph as Best Supporting Actor for his role alongside Buckley. Their film Hamnet is also firmly in the running at 13/8 to land Best Motion Picture, with Sinners a narrow 4/5 favourite.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BOYLE Sports, said:
“Awards season is revving up in Hollywood and the money is pouring in for another massive moment for Irish talent. Jessie Buckley is the one punters have latched onto, and if the odds are right, she’ll have plenty to celebrate at the Golden Globes.”
Irish hopes could stretch well beyond the Globes too, with Buckley already strongly fancied at 1/8 to become the first Irish woman to win the Best Actress Oscar when the Academy Awards arrive in March.
