Irish Cup Coursing Favourites
Navalny – 5/2
The favourite for the 2025 Irish Cup is Navalny Trained by Brendan Matthews for Fintan & John Comerford.
Navalny won the Glin Trial Stake in 2023 year but was unable to put his ability to the test in the 2024 Derby after being withdrawn through injury. He returned to Glin this season to land his owner a 10th Desmond Cup. That was followed by a Loughrea Connacht Cup adding to his accolades on the field.
Finally reaching Clonmel this year in the form of the Champion Stakes and he ran-up an impressive winner of the stake beating litter Cool Spirit in clocking 12.72 before beating Ballymac Sports in the final after pulling clear on the hill.
Navalny opened 3/1 favourite for the event and following a polished first round victory in 11.63 he has been cut to odds of 5/2.
The White and Black March 2022 Whelp is also bred in the purple being the son of Newinn Wonder and Foxhollow Queen who both found success both on the field and in the breeding paddocks
Cool Spirit – 5/1
The joint second favourite for the 2025 Irish Cup is Cool Spirit for Brendan Matthews, a dog bred in the purple being the son of 2014 Irish Cup winner Newinn Wonder and 2020 Oaks winner Foxhollow Queen.
Cool Spirit burst on the scene in 2023 when he qualified for Clonmel when he won the Newcastlewest trial stake. The dog was an impressive winner in the opening two rounds of the BoyleSports Derby in 2023 clocking 12.47 and 12.51 before being beaten by Tree Top Tyson in the third round.
He made his name running up the 2023 Irish Cup clocking 11.50, 11.34, 11.37, a lightening 11.24 and an 11.39 to reach the final before going on to win the final beating Go Home Ourthat and being crowned Irish Cup Champion for 2023.
He was beaten in the first round of the 2024 Champion Stakes by Ballymac Major and was shocked in the first round of the Irish Cup by Ashmore Range.
Though he lost in the Champion Stakes this year after a closely fought tussle against his litter brother Navalny. He opened his 2025 Irish Cup account with an impressive 11.61 win in his opening course.
