Ireland v Australia Preview
Ireland Form
Ireland entered 2024 on the back of another (albeit narrow) World Cup Quarter-Final defeat this time to New Zealand 24-28 as one of the favourites for the Six Nations. They showed little signs of a post-World Cup “hangover” winning their opening three matches 17-38 against France, 36-0 against Italy and 31-7 against Wales. While their Grand Slam hopes ended with a 23-22 loss to England their final day 17-13 win over Scotland secured their second successive Six Nations title.
Following a few months of a hiatus from their Six Nations campaign they returned to the field for a July series away to South Africa in a repeat of their Rugby World Cup Pool Stage game they played out an entertaining and competitive series with the Springboks winning 27-20 in the opener and Ireland claiming a 24-25 win in the final fixture.
Plenty was expected of Ireland in the Autumn Series, but they put in an underwhelming display in their opening 13-23 defeat to New Zealand. However, they’ve since recovered with a 22-19 victory over Argentina and a 52-17 win over Fiji last weekend.
Australia Form
The Wallabies entered the 2024 Rugby Championship on the back of a dismal 2023 Rugby World Cup where they had a first loss to Fiji in 69 years (15-22) and a record-breaking defeat against Wales (40-6) which resulted in their first-ever pool stage elimination. Eddie Jones departed the Head Coach position, and he was replaced with the high-profile addition of Joe Schmidt.
Their 2024 season started more positively though defeating Wales 25-16 with Joe Schmidt giving 7 players debuts. That was followed by a 36-28 win again over Wales. Before the Rugby Championship, they defeated Georgia 40-29 However, they got a reality check in their opening two Rugby Championship fixtures losing to World Champions South Africa 7-33 and 12-30. Following that their first win came against Australia 19-20 though the following fixture was a hammering by them 67-27. They concluded the competition with defeats 28-31 and 33-12 against New Zealand.
Their Autumn Series started with plenty of promise when they defeated England in a 37-42 thriller and that was followed by a 20-52 demolition of Wales. However, the teething problems are evident still and last weekend they lost 27-13 to Scotland.

Key Players
Caelan Doris - Ireland
The Leinster player (26) is fast approaching his 50th cap with him being 46 times since 2020 scoring 35 points in the process and has been one of Ireland’s standout performers. Last weekend against Fiji he was imperious leading an inexperienced Irish side. He opened the scoring, assisted van der Flier and even saw himself playing at Centre during the second half.
Rob Valetini - Australia
The 2023 Australian Player of the Year has been capped 39 times by his country since 2019 scoring 10 points. The Flanker (26) who plays his club rugby with Brumbies was one of the few positives from their defeat against Scotland, who showed endeavour and work ethic in defence throughout and was disruptive in the line out.
Ireland v Australia Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Ireland 22-10 Australia
Ireland are one of the top four sides in World Rugby at the moment and their decisive victory against Fiji last weekend was the ruthless performance they needed.
Australian Rugby is in a period of transition and though they picked up some strong recent victories their loss to Scotland last Sunday shows they’re still vulnerable.
Ireland should win, but I’m not expecting this game to be a procession by any means.
Best Bet: Ireland 1-12 points @19/10
