Ireland v Argentina Preview
Ireland Form
Ireland entered 2024 on the back of another (albeit narrow) World Cup Quarter-Final defeat this time to New Zealand 24-28 as one of the favourites for the Six Nations. They showed little signs of a post-World Cup “hangover” winning their opening three matches 17-38 against France, 36-0 against Italy and 31-7 against Wales. While their Grand Slam hopes ended with a 23-22 loss to England their final day 17-13 win over Scotland secured their second successive Six Nations title.
Following a few months of a hiatus from their Six Nations campaign they returned to the field for a July series away to South Africa in a repeat of their Rugby World Cup Pool Stage game they played out an entertaining and competitive series with the Springboks winning 27-20 in the opener and Ireland claiming a 24-25 win in the final fixture.
Plenty was expected of Ireland in the Autumn Series, but they put in an underwhelming display in their opening 13-23 defeat to New Zealand though that’s also a sign of the rising expectation levels for Irish Rugby in recent years.
Argentina Form
Argentina came into 2024 on the back of the 2023 Rugby World Cup where they finished 4th place following their 6-44 Semi-Final defeat to New Zealand they narrowly lost to England 23-26 in the Bronze Final which was the second time they finished 4th in a World Cup following their 2015 result.
They returned to the field in July when they played out an entertaining series with France losing the initial game 13-28 before winning the final game 33-25 and the concluding international comprehensively 5-79 against Uruguay.
In August they commenced their Rugby Championship campaign with a 30-38 win over New Zealand before they lost 42-10 in the reverse fixture. Against Australia, they lost 19-20 in their opener before comprehensively beating them 67-27. Against the Springboks, they had a historic 29-28 win before losing their final game of the competition 48-7.
Argentina opened their Autumn Nations Series with an 18-50 hammering of Italy.

Key Players
Caelan Doris – Ireland
The Leinster player (26) is fast approaching his 50th cap with him being capped 44 times since 2020 where he has scored 30 points and has been one of Ireland’s standout performers. In their underwhelming display against the All-Blacks last weekend he was one of Ireland’s better performers who carried well, and his tackling was pivotal to the Irish defence.
The Irish captain is 9/4 to score a try anytime in this game.
Tomás Albornoz – Argentina
The Benetton Fly-Half (27) was first capped by Argentina at Senior Level only two years ago making his debut against Australia in the Rugby Championship. He soon became the main man for the Pumas and in their opening Autumn Nations Fixture against Italy, he scored 1 try and made 6/7 conversions and 1/1 penalties in their 18-50 win.
Ireland v Argentina Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Ireland 25-10 Argentina
Ireland underwhelmed last weekend against New Zealand but it’s also a sign of the times that a 13-23 loss to the All Blacks is considered a “disappointment”. However, Ireland remains one of the best sides in World Rugby.
Argentinian Rugby is certainly on the rise with victories over New Zealand, Australia and South Africa so can’t be discounted in this game.
Ireland should win this game, provided they don’t go into it with too much complacency.
Best Bet: Ireland Score First, Lead at HT And Win @ 5/6
